My male dog won't calm after female spay. He's mounting and barking.

Otherwise the only strong enough medication that would work would have to obtained from your Vet. Drugs like Trazadone, acepromazine, Xanax, etc are prescription only. I would doubt that an over the counter medication will control this for you. I would contact your Vet and see if they will prescribe something over the phone but they may require an exam first. Hello. He is just being a male dog. Even after neutering, some males may still try to mount females, but in his case, he is still strongly attracted to your spayed female. If you do not plan on neutering the male, keep an eye on the male as the female can get annoyed at him & you may have a fight on your hands. If your male is still quite young, he may mature out of this behavior as his instincts are very strong right now. Just keep an eye on him. This is not due to stress it is likely due to the hormones she is emitting and what Anakin is picking up on. Having her spayed should help with this problem but for now I would keep them separate if possible. I hope this helps! You can try the calming treats but they may not help much. Vigorous activity every day like running or playing fetch will likely be most beneficial for him. Spaying and neutering provide health benefits for both sexes and I recommend to have both pets fixed. Henry can be neutered at any point but he will still have sperm in the reporoductive tract for about a month so he can still impregnate a female in heat. Bailey should be spayed 2-3 months after the last day of her heat cycle. She will come into heat about every 6 months. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Since they are both neutered, this behavior is likely caused by over-stimulation. It's not sexual, it's just an inappropriate outlet for being overwhelmed or overexcited -- think really tired toddler starting to throw things and hit his friends. I would recommend redirecting him to a toy or playing with you, or remove him calmly from the situation. You don't want to punish him for the behavior, but you do want to stop it.

Hello there! I understand the frustration of having an unneutered male dog. They don't have hormone cycles like females do, so they don't have a "heat" like females do. Essentially, their hormone levels are the same all the time, which can be even more frustrating. Mounting behavior is not all hormonal, and does have a component of dominance (so he may still do this even after he's neutered). Even females will mount other dogs if they want to express their dominance over them. The mounting behavior will hopefully abate once a dominance hierarchy is established in your home between the dogs, but not necessarily. It can also spur fights, so be watchful over your dogs when they are together, and I recommend against leaving them alone together until you are comfortable with Shadow's personality and interactions with your older dog. Neutering may help, but it takes a long time for those hormones to get out of their system (at least a month), so in the meantime, consistent training can be helpful in stopping the behavior. I have seen some trainers keep a leash and harness on a dog that jumps or mounts, so that when the dog starts to jump up, they can step on the leash and prevent it. It's important to have another task for your dog to do instead of jumping/mounting, so starting off with teaching a solid "sit" could be helpful. Reward him with a treat for any positive behavior, and ignore undesired behavior. I highly recommend contacting a good trainer or veterinary behaviorist if the behavior continues. Since he is unneutered he may be picking up on her scent even if she is spayed, it's also a way to show dominance over other dogs. If you don't plan to breed him I suggest getting him neutered. This will help the behavior lessen over time and will also prevent some potential health problems as well as reduce the urge to roam and possibly get injured if he escapes looking for a female in heat. You can try getting him obedience training so he will be better behaved and more likely to listen when you try to separate them.
