Is lice shampoo safe and effective for treating dog mange mites?

Mange is caused by burrowing mites which are not affected by coconut oil. The mange shampoo may help but there is a much easier way of getting rid of mange mites. Your vet can give your dog an ivermectin injection, you could get "Revolution" flea preventive (this is also licensed for mite treatment and very effective) or you can give your dog the Bravecto flea treatment, which also, and very effectively, kills mange mites.

There are no specifically licenced shampoos for killing lice in dogs, anectodally people use dermoline shampoo for treating lice in horses. However it is expensive and not tested in dogs. Personally I would use a flea shampoo as the active ingredients will tackle live too. Another thing you could try would be frontline spray, the fipronil in it works well on lice. It is really important to treat the home as well with thorough cleaning and an insecticide spray.

Use an oatmeal type bath. This will help to moisturize the skin. You may also ask your veterinarian about using a special prescription shampoo which can help to clear out the pores and may be somewhat effective against the mites (though you need to continue your current treatment). It really depends on what he has. Lice and ticks are very different things. I would recommend starting with an oral flea/tick preventive (which you'll need to get from his vet) and a good bath with general dog shampoo. Actually, given his tender age, starting with a vet visit would be best so they can treat him appropriately from the get go.

There are not many studies that show the lindane shampoo really works on dogs since it is a shampoo that is intended for human use. There are many different effective treatment options available to your that are safe for Tom to treat scabies. There are topical medications like selamectin (Revolution) or Moxidectin (Advantage Multi). There are also dips/bathing options like lime-sulfur dips weekly. Lastly, there are oral medications like bravecto and simparica. I would consult your veterinarian to see if any of these options are available to you given Tom's clinical signs. Good luck!

Use a product such as revolution, frontline or advantage multi as they have activity against lice. Grooming is also essential so make sure that your puppy is staying clean and mat free. I hope you have her on Bravecto (or other product) to treat the mites. That is the best way to get rid of them. This shampoo will help as the mites live down in the hair follicles and this will help to flush them out.
