My 45-day Lhasa Apso puppy has pus-filled cysts. What should I do?

It sounds like this is likely to be a cyst of some kind, but could also be an abscess, localized skin infection or some other type of skin growth - pus from an abscess would usually have an odor to it, but not always. You can clean the area thoroughly with warm water and soap, and it's fine to use topical antibiotic ointment like Neosporin as well. But in order to find out for sure what it is and get it treated more effectively, you will need to take your dog to a vet for an exam. He/she can take a sample of the white substance for analysis to help determine what it is, and will advise you based on the results whether it needs to be treated with oral antibiotics or other medication, or if it needs to be surgically removed.

It could be a cyst, mass, or pustule. Have your vet take a look at it to determine the best way to treat. She may need an antibiotic to treat an infection and/or it may need to be removed. Your vet can do an aspirate to help diagnose.

It looks like you've done a lot to help this little guy. I'm sure the vet would have told you this, but make sure you are stimulating him to poop after each feeding by wiping his bum with a warm, moist, tissue or soft cloth. Puppies commonly get this on their bellies and they usually go away with good cleaning. I recommend cleaning the belly with a medicated wipe or shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day until the bump(s) are gone. If it seems to get worse, then you'll want to take him into the vet for an exam. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zephyra. She will need to see her veterinarian as is so young. She could have a skin infection (in which case don't pop the pustules) or a rare condition known as puppy strangles. Her doctor will be able to differentiate and recommend treatment. Hi there! I'm so sorry to read about Choco's troubles. It looks like he has a pustule. This is basically a pimple-like lesion caused very often by a staph infection. Sometimes the lesions are singular, or sometimes they can spread and get worse. If I have dog come in to see me with pustules, I will often prescribe a medicated shampoo to help clean the skin and also moisturize it. Dry skin can cause a break in the skin barrier and allow bacteria to congregate. I also will often times prescribe a course of oral antibiotics, to insure that the infection doesn't spread, and goes away quickly. I would monitor the lesion, and make an appointment to see Choco's veterinarian. They can evaluate Choco's skin and make sure there is nothing else going on, and see if the infection is severe enough for topical and oral medications. I hope you find this answer helpful! If this lesion is filled with pus, then it's not a cyst, it's likely an abscess which is a pocket of infection. I would have Zeb seen by the vet for this, as if it is an abscess, it will need to be drained and flushed sterilely, and he will need antibiotics for the infection. The vet can diagnose if he does have an abscess, and can treat him for it.

This should be examined by a vet . If this is near the belly button it could be an umbilical abscess which can easily affect the liver. Any other abscess can cause sepsis if it is not treated. Please have a veterinarian examine her. Abscesses are usually lanced and flushed, and your puppy may need antibiotics.
