Is it too late to switch my 7-month-old puppy to puppy food?

Lifetime large breed dog food is formulated for all life stages, including puppies. Since he is already 60 pounds, you can begin to transition him to this diet at any time. Please switch diets gradually by mixing the old and new diets together for 5-7 days to ease the transition.

Hi there and thank you for your question. There is currently no research out there hat supports this claim. Lance should be on a good quality puppy food until he is about 1 year old- sounds like you have a nice food there (Hills Science Large Breed Puppy). That will do just fine until he is 1 year old. Puppies need lots of extra vitamins and minerals in their diets as well as extra calories to match the amount of energy they are expending on growth which a puppy food contains. I would not change his food to adult just yet. I hope this helps!

You need to keep in mind that every pet is different and what works for your dog may not work for someone else's. I recommend a food that is certified by AAFCO to start as this means that is meets minimum standards. Next, the puppy need to like it and eat it willingly. There needs to be no vomiting and diarrhea on the diet nor an excessive amount of bowel movements. A dog should defecate 2-3 times per day. More than this is abnormal. Finally, her haircut should be glossy and healthy. If she is meeting all of these requirements on her diet, then there is no reason to change. My only warning is to avoid grain free diets as there is recent research linking them to heart disease. I hope this information helps!

Ideally, growing dogs should be fed puppy food as their nutritional needs are different, especially for minerals such as calcium. Energy demands and protein levels are generally higher for growing dogs so as long as she has not become significantly overweight or has any lameness/joint pain this diet would be unlikely to have any side effects!

Luna is adorable! Thank you for posting pictures! We generally recommend feeding a puppy food for as long as a dog is growing rapidly. For a very small dog that will only be 6-9 months. For a very large dog that will be more like 18 months. For Luna, that will likely be about year. If Luna is no longer growing quickly and is starting to put on too much weight, then you may need to change her to an adult food sooner, but changing at around a year of age should be the right age for Luna. Puppy food is higher in calories and has different quantities of fat, protein and certain vitamins and minerals than adult dog food. As long as Max is not overweight it should be okay for him to have puppy food as long as he doesn't develop diarrhea or other gastrointestinal upset.
