Why is my 5-month-old Labrador puppy struggling to sit or stand?

Poor Duke! Unfortunately hip dysplasia is a common congenital abnormality in Labs, and it could be that he is suffering from that causing his difficulty getting up, sitting, and laying down. It could also be due to ruptured cranial cruciate ligaments and/or meniscal damage in his knees, which are also common in large breed dogs. He is in pain if he's having these difficulties, and I would have him seen by a vet tomorrow for physical exam, lameness exam, and x-rays. These tests will help the vet identify what is causing his difficulties, and can discuss treatment options with you. If it is a problem with his cruciate ligaments or meniscus, surgery will likely be require to fix it.

The vet may prescribe her pain medications if they feel it's needed. Please do not give Boo any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

I would have Topaz seen by a vet if he's having problems getting up when laying down. I would be concerned that he may have a problem with his hips, spine, or joints in his legs causing these problems. Hip dysplasia is a genetic disorder that is more common in large breed dogs, but it can occur in smaller breeds. I think it would be a good idea to have x-rays done on his hips, spine, and back legs to see if there is an identifiable problem behind his difficulty getting up. If one is found, the vet can discuss treatment options with you.

This is probably due to hip dysplasia, a chronic knee problem or arthritis in her joints. She also could have a bulging intervertebral disc causing the symptoms. I recommend using a Help em Up harness on her so you can easily assist her to stand up. In addition speak with your veterinarian about giving her pain medication. I also like to give an omega 3 supplement to reduce inflammation. If she’s overweight reducing her weight will reduce the strain, stiffness and pain in her joints. I'm sorry to hear Lucky is having some issues. I would be concerned about an injury either to the spine or the the legs. Unfortunately there is not much you can do at home except make him REST. No walks, no running, no stairs and no jumping. This can help the body to heal. I would also recommend to take him to see the veterinarian to have an exam and possibly radiographs. Labs are a breed prone to hip dysplasia although he is young for signs to show up just yet. Hope Lucky starts doing better.

Poor guy. He is a bit young to have muscle weakness, so this is a bit concerning. I would highly recommend taking him to your vet to have his legs examined first. He may have an underlying disorder that is causing this, such as myasthenia gravis, a muscle injury, or something else entirely. Once the vet is able to diagnose the problem (using testing such as bloodwork +/- radiographs), then we will know what Lucky needs for treatment of his conditon. Also make sure you aren’t giving any kind of supplements to him, such as calcium, which can potentially cause musculoskeletal disorders in pets. Also feeding him a high quality puppy food such as Royal Canin, Hill’s science diet, Evo, Eukanuba or Merrick is also ideal for proper bone and muscle growth. It sounds like Leo is very sick. For a young dog like him, toxin exposure, heavy parasites, or intestinal blockage are the big concerns. If he is not properly vaccinated, a sever viral infection could also cause these signs. I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian immediately. The doctor will likely recommend to check blood work and possibly radiographs to try to determine the underlying cause. Act quickly as the sooner he starts treatment, the better the prognosis.
