My dog struggles to stand and limps. Could it be hip dysplasia?

Poor Boo sounds like she is in pain! Hip dysplasia is common in large breed dogs like Labs, and it could cause her difficult standing up. I would have her seen by a vet in the morning for a lameness exam and x-rays. These tests will help identify what is causing her problems getting how up and how best to treat it. The vet may prescribe her pain medications if they feel it's needed. Please do not give Boo any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

This X-ray shows she has poor hip conformation or hip dysplasia and hip arthritis. Unfortunately this is a common orthopedic problem in German Shepard dogs and othe large breeds. Most dogs respond well to weight loss if needed and dog arthritis medication prescribed by your veterinarian. By keeping her active and moving she will maintain her muscle mass which will support her hips so there is less bone rubbing, which will result in less pain. Giving joint supplements like Dasuquin or Cosequin can help in addition to Omega 3 or fish oil which will reduce some of the inflammation. Physical therapy with a rehab veterinarian is effective in maintaining her muscles and help reduce the limping. It could be she has arthritis, hip dysplasia, or a problem with her back causing her difficulty getting up. Arthritis is common in middle aged to older dogs. I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose if she is suffering from arthritis, and can give her some pain meds for it. Rimadyl (an NSAID) is a good drug to give to help with the symptoms of arthritis. I also recommend giving her glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function. Use of them helps relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis, and you can use it in conjunction with Rimadyl to help maximize relief from her symptoms. I hope this helps!

I would have Topaz seen by a vet if he's having problems getting up when laying down. I would be concerned that he may have a problem with his hips, spine, or joints in his legs causing these problems. Hip dysplasia is a genetic disorder that is more common in large breed dogs, but it can occur in smaller breeds. I think it would be a good idea to have x-rays done on his hips, spine, and back legs to see if there is an identifiable problem behind his difficulty getting up. If one is found, the vet can discuss treatment options with you.

Being overweight will not help Aarfaa, as it puts extra strain on her joints. She could have a problem with her hips or with her cruciate ligaments causing the limping. Because this has been going on for a few months, she needs to see a vet. I would take her into one first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing her pain, and can treat her. While her hips may certainly be a contributing factor in her sudden inability to rise, there may be other issues at play here that caused such an acute change in condition. Particularly in older dogs that present as you've described, possible conditions that can result in this mostly include spinal conditions that affect the disks, or bony tumors that destroy bone / compress the spinal cord. On the other hand, it might just be advancing hip problems. Ultimately you aren't going to know without some diagnostics, primarily x-rays of the spine and hips. This would be where I would start if I were in your shoes. In fact, I was in almost the identical position with my own 14 year old Pittie. It ended up being a spinal tumor but one that was very treatable. This is where diagnostic testing becomes so important. Depending on the cause of the sudden lameness, the prognosis ranges from extremely poor to good with appropriate optimal treatment. In terms of how you should proceed in the immediate, sudden lameness should be dealt with as soon as possible. Spinal conditions, as they progress, become exceedingly more difficult to treat. There are few possibilities: severe arthritis, Lyme disease, a slipped disk in her beck, degenerative myelopathy or even a spinal tumor.
