Benedryl can sometimes calm down some pets but not always. Additionally, NO over the counter medication or herb will calm a pet enough to allow any actions if the pet does not want it done. A better option for Hawkins is to have him groomed professionally or speak with your veterinarian about a stronger sedative like Trazodone or Acepromazine. If he is extremely aggressive while being groomed, you may want to consider having him sedated and groomed at your vet's office. This will mean that Marley is closely monitored during the sedation and supported with fluids and heat if necessary. Your vet can also perform a thorough exam, and ensure that Marley's heart and lungs are healthy enough to handle the sedation. At home, you can try calming chews available in most pet stores, and consider getting Marley a muzzle to keep yourself safe.

First of all, Bentley is way too young for a bath (unless he has gotten into something nasty). It is a good idea to bathe him twice a year, just as the hair starts to clump. As for the equipment: I had a Samoyed for years, and also Siberians--another double-coated breed. Your best bet is to use a rake (made for dogs, not your lawn rake!). Aside from a general going-over to get the loose hair out, the best method for grooming Bentley is to pick up a section of hair., as if you were going to tease it. Do nothing with the section except hold it. Rake what's left underneath (the undercoat). If Bentley's hair is really clumping, you can grab a handful yourself. You might want to use the metal comb to get the hair around his face, but it's not really necessary--nor are all the other products you bought. You can train him to the rake by initially just showing it to him with a treat. Just run the rake gently over his coat and treat/praise when he leaves it alone.

Desensitize them to the sight of the brush by leaving it out in plain sight all the time. Incorporate it into play and interaction. Do this for ever increasing periods of time. Hold it out and allow them to smell it. "Brush" them using the flat side ever so often. Do not force them in any way. Use praise and rewards as they progress. It will take time and patience, but it can be done.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would ask your vet for oral (pills) sedatives to try at home. I would also purchase a muzzle to use so he can not bite you. Maybe with the right combination of sedatives and muzzle you will be able to trim around his face and do his nails. Sadly there is a small group of dogs that need injectable sedatives to have their nails done at the Vet. You can also practice with the oral sedatives, using yummy treats and gently play around his face and feet with the hope to desensitize him. It would take time and practice. There is nothing OTC that you can safely give that will effectively calm her down enough for grooming. You may need to have her lightly sedated by your veterinarian so she can be safely shaved or clipped. Using scissors at home can lead to a laceration if you aren't careful. An exam is also a good idea to determine why Xena is not grooming herself.
