The main difference is that the Iverhart Max will control an additional intestinal parasite (tapeworms). Otherwise the medications will both protect against heartworms, roundworms, hookworms and are generally well tolerated. The Max product does contain an additional ingredient (to kill the tapeworms). Pyrantel would be better to give - I would administer 0.5mls by mouth. You can repeat this up to every 2 weeks until he is 4 months old. Piperazine is really not that effective. If you want to give it you can. The dose would be 1/2 teaspoon.

You can give him Drontal, which kills tapeworms. Heartgard contains ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate, while Drontal contains praziquantel which is needed to kill tapeworms. Do not give them that the same time, but it's fine to give a day or two apart.

Once you have that here's how to calculate the amount. (You should get a dosing syringe so you can measure cc's or ml's) One teaspoon is 5 ml so 1/2 teaspoon is 2.5 ml. If she weighs one pound her dose would be 0.5 ml orally. So take her actual weight in pounds and multiply it by 2.5. Then divide that number by 5 and that will be the number of ml's or milliliters (cc's) that you should give her. Great question. Good luck with Baby Girl. She should be dewormed 3-4 times and the dewormings should be done every 3 weeks.

Here is how to figure it out: Body weight in pounds divided by 2.2 gives you the body weight in kg. For example, a 12 pound cat is 5.45 kg. Then, take the kg weight and multiply it by 5 -- in the example above, the 12 pound (5.45 kg) cat would get 27.27 mg of the pyrantel. Since each ml contains 50 mg, take 27.27 and divide by 50......27.27/50 = 0.54 ml. 12 pound cat = 0.54ml 10 pound cat = 0.45ml 2 pound cat = 0.09ml Be sure to dose them again in two weeks to make sure all the worms are killed.
