How to dose pyrantel pamoate for your cats and kittens by weight?

Nothing special just treat at 5mg/kg (1lb=0,45kg) once. Pyrantel is usually given as a single dose that is repeated in two to three weeks to kill any parasites that have matured during that time. Kittens dose of 0.5ml per 1kg body weight for 3 consecutive days. This is the dosage for the 10% panacur liquid suspension. 1kg = 2.2 lbs. 2.5 lbs = 1.3kg so at 0.5ml/kg you multiply 0.5 x 1.3 = 0.65 ml

If each packet treats a ten pound animal and yours is 6.5 lbs, you only need to use 65% of the packet. This will be difficult to do accurately by eye, so the best way to to do it would be to dilute the Panacur in water, which will allow you to better volumetrically dose out the medication. If you dilute the granules down to 10mL, you would give 6.5 mL for three consecutive days. Hope this makes sense.

It would be impossible to get a small enough dose measured out for a 1.5 pound kitten, therefore, it is not recommended. You can, however, use the Panacur liquid but that needs to be given once a day for 3-5 days in a row and is rather expensive. It can be purchased over the counter. Follow the dosing recommendations on the bottle. Follow dosing and frequency recommendations on the packaging but in general, the dose is 1.0mls per 10 pounds of body weight. You need to get a 1cc syringe and give 0.15mls right now as she is 1.5 pounds. You will need to increase the dosage each time as her weight will be increasing. I would give Muezza Panacur. It's a three day course of treatment, and she will need another course of treatment two weeks after the first ends. After that, she should be dewormed monthly until she is six months of age, and then she should be dewormed every three months. The amount to give her is based on her weight, and the instructions on the bottle of Panacur will tell you how much to give her. I hope this helps!

Your cat is beautiful! Albendazole and mebendazole will also kill hook worms. Levamisole has demonstrated activity against hook worms, however a dose regimen has not been established. Can you ring your veterinarian again to ask him to prescribe a different wormer for your cat? Maybe he knows an effective dosage for Levamisole against hookworms in cats. We do not have such a dosage recommendation here as we do not use Levamisole for cats principally because of the narrow therapeutic index.
