My Italian Greyhound has a red patch, doesn't bother him. What is it?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh goodness I love greyhounds and in the US we never see them as puppies just as adults rescued off the race track! Sadly a lot of skin conditions look exactly the same. The most common skin diseases that look like that are: demodex (non-contagious mite) which are sometimes hard to get on a scrape, a skin infection either from yeast or bacteria or ring worm. I recommend you ask your Vet about treating for demodex despite a negative scrape. Some of the edible flea and tick products are being used off label to treat demodex. I'd also ask the vet about doing a tape cytology of one of the hairless areas and look at it under the microscope to see if there are too many yeast or bacteria present. And then have them send out a culture of the hair/skin for ringworm. The culture can take up to 4 weeks to be finalized. I guess ultimately it could be nutritional and Rain just may need time on the diet you have him on. Good luck!

From the picture you provided it does look as though there is quite a bit of redness / irritation. I would recommend using Sentry wound ointment, which you can find at PetCo or online. You can apply this twice daily to the area. If there is no improvement after 48-72 hours, I would recommend having this examined by your veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Please, clean the feet in 4% chlorhexidine solution (available over the counter at pharmacies) twice a day and make sure Chip is not licking or chewing the feet excessively. However, if there is no improvement to this treatment in 3-4 days, you should take your dog to your nearest vets for an appointment.

If you are seeing other signs like scabs, pimple-like rash, increased drinking and urinating, or increased appetite, see your vet as these could be a sign of other conditions. Based on the photos and your description, I suspect what you are seeing may be due to insect bites such as ants. If this is just inflammation from insect bites and not an infection, it will likely clear up on its own. I would recommend using a product such as Malacetic Conditioning spray which can be found online quite easily or a steroid spray from PetCo and apply to the area twice daily until resolved. If pustules begin to form or the rash spreads / worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Bentley so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This could be a wound or an infection. I would recommend cleaning this using a solution of diluted betadine and water (mix until a light brown color) and monitor for signs of worsening.
