My dog has a hotspot. What can I try at home for the irritation?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 24 days old | 30 lbs

I think my dog has a hotspot. Is there anything I can try at home? First picture is yesterday. 2nd is after 24hrs of gold bond.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. From the picture you provided it does look as though there is quite a bit of redness / irritation. I would recommend using Sentry wound ointment, which you can find at PetCo or online. You can apply this twice daily to the area. If there is no improvement after 48-72 hours, I would recommend having this examined by your veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This looks like a hotspot. I would recommend bringing Jasper to a veterinarian to clip the area and clean it up. If it appears like a hotspot I would also recommend oral antibiotics and potentially topical medication to help.

This can be caused by allergies but also something may have irritated Jasper's skin and just from him scratching at it can cause a hotspot.

I wouldn't put an elizabethan collar on him right now since the lesion is on Jasper's neck. I would call your veterinarian and make an appointment for the earliest they have since the more he scratches at it the worse the lesion will get.

From what I can tell in your pictures it could be a hotspot forming-if that is the case it may be an allergic reaction to something (a sting, bite, other environmental allergen). You can start by using a triple antibiotic ointment 2x daily on the spot-may sure your pet does not scratch the area or ingest any of the medicine.

If it persists or worsens, you may have to take her in to see your regular vet for a good checkup and make sure that nothing more serious has come from it. I hope this helps!

My dog has a hotspot. How can I treat and clean it safely at home?

A definite NO on the hydrogen peroxide! 1. It is best to shave the hair around the affected area if at all possible. If you don't have clippers you can use scissors to shorten the hair - just be careful you don't cut him. If you can't shave or trim the hair don't stress too much about it. 2. If he is really itching you can also apply this topical hydrocortisone spray after the wound is dry from the using the pads. Once a day should be enough. My dog has a red, irritated armpit sore. What should I put on it?

From the excellent picture you have provided it looks like Winstyn may have moist dermatitis, or a "hot spot". Unfortunately, hot spots often require a trip to the vet for clipping of the area, cleaning, and prescription of a healing spray / ointment with antibiotics and a steroid. All of these interventions will help the area heal quickly, and minimise the level of discomfort that Winstyn has to experience. Due to the location of the sore it will particularly difficult to treat at home. In the meantime you can help Winstyn by; Placing a an e-collar to prevent him biting or attracting at the sore and making it worse Attempt to air out the area as much as possible to help it dry out. This is key to healing. Do not attempt any medications at home as they can cause pain and in some cases delay healing. I hope this is a helpful answer and that Winstyn feels better soon. I recommend you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as this will likely require local therapy with cleaning of the site, pain control medications and antibiotics. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I actually do think that it looks like a hot spot but honestly, I have never seen one in that location. A hot spot is really just a skin infection so it is certainly possible especially if he was scraped in that general location. I would not be overly concerned about it as it looks superficial. Licking can cause more infection and will delay healing. Dog allergies & hotspots: At-home care for itchy skin infections?
