My kids are scared of playful puppies. How do I introduce one?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would allow the cats to safely sniff and see the puppy through a baby gate for 2 weeks. Then when you let them interact the puppy should be on a leash 100% of the time so you can control him. The cats should have a safe place (cat tree, a room with a cat door only then can fit through) to be able to escape from the puppy. If the puppy shows any form of aggression towards the cats he should never be allowed to be alone with the cats and off a leash in the house. That means he is crated when you are not home. Hopefully since Moose is young the will be easy to teach and the cats will put him in his place! Good luck!

Different breeds of dogs will have different temperments that they SUPPOSED to have in regards to kids, other dogs, etc. That being said, every dog is different and dogs also need to be trained to be OK with kids and other dogs. This requires exposure in safe and gentle settings to kids and other dogs so that they learn that kids are OK . It is important to teach your kids how to behave around a new dog, and to learn the signs that the dog doesn't like an action that is occurring. Also, small children and babies should never be left with dogs, since if a dog decides to attack or bite, serious damage or death can occur to small children. I think it would be best if they are introduced slowly to the puppy meaning for short amounts of time to be increased daily until they are getting along well consistently. They should be supervised at the beginning when interacting with your cats or puppy. I think it would be a good idea to have toys and beds for both to make them feel more at home. Good luck!

I would plan on taking things very slowly when introducing the cats to your new puppy. Since the puppy is so young he should adjust very well and learn easily how to live with cats. The cats will most likely avoid him a lot and that’s OK. Just let them come around to him in their own time. This type of behavior can be very concerning, especially when there are small children around. The good news is that your puppy is still very young and this is a good time to teach her good and appropriate behaviors. You are already doing a great job by exercising her regularly (a fast-paced 20-30 minute walk 2-3 times a day is best) and by redirecting her aggressive tendencies with chew toys. Another tactic you can use in training is to immediately stop play and ignore her if she starts becoming aggressive. This will teach her that that type of behavior does not get her what she wants (your attention). It is also a good idea to always use positive reinforcement when she is being well behaved. Puppies respond better and learn faster from positive reinforcement (like verbal praise and treats) than negative reinforcement (like yelling or hitting them). It would also be wise to start some initial training of basic commands as well, like sit, stay/wait, come, etc. This will help her focus and energy levels and will help establish your role the dominant one in the relationship. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Lucci's behavior is common. He is still young and you can still work on this. I would take him to a trainer to have him learn the "leave it" and "look" commands. I would purchase a gentle leader face harness and use that on walks. Do not take him off the leash around other dogs or children until he listens to you perfectly. Little breed dogs are loud and they bark. Some are more pushy with their dominance and you will need to figure out how much Lucci will exhibit these behaviors as he grows up and reaches social/behavioral maturity (up to 3 years of age). I recommend you get aggressive with training and using professionals. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I understand your concern and applaud your for realizing this is a huge issue when there are children in the home. Tanyet mauled you over a resource he wanted and he has the likelihood of doing it again with something else highly valued. I know you love him so I suggest hiring a private trainer or a Veterinary Behaviorist to work with you and Tanyet. I would have him crated or locked in a separate room when the children are home and up. If this fails then I would rehome him to a house with out children I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!
