How to introduce a new dog when my current dog is grieving a loss?

I'm so sorry you recently lost two dogs. Please accept my condolences for your loss. I would look into getting a dog around a year old for Maya, or possibly two to three years of age. This way, the dog would be fully vaccinated and house trained. It also wouldn't be as active as a puppy, but could still play with her. The dog should also be spayed or neutered. You can have either a male or female, I personally like having an even ratio of male to female, so I'd recommend a male dog. Breed, you could do something like a lab or Golden Retriever. Those are great dogs who get along with other dogs really well. I hope this helps.

If you will be inheriting her dogs I would recommend getting them used to them now. Slowly introduce them to each other outside the home and once they are doing well together I would then bring them to your house. I would bring them little by little and leave them for longer periods of time at your home. That way the transition is a little easier for everyone. Since Bella Donna is a mellow pup, she might do better with another middle-aged or older dog rather than an energetic puppy. Some small breed dogs are little bundles of energy, like most terriers. I think that the most important thing to do before bringing home a new dog is to have Bella Donna meet any prospective new dog on neutral territory before bringing them home. Many rescues will also allow you to foster a new dog for a few days before officially adopting them to test the waters with other pets at home. It may be that Haden never develops the close bond with Ginger that he had with Maltida, only time will tell this. It is important now to be sure that Haden and Ginger are not competing for food, sleep areas, or attention. I would recommend feeding them in separate locations for now and being sure Haden has easy access to water and food when needed without having to compete with the puppy. Also be sure he has a place he can escape from the puppy if needed. Many times we get a puppy and they can overwhelm our older dog because they have much more energy and persistence. If Ginger is getting to be too much for Haden, allowing him to have his space/an area he can be away from her is important. Without knowing how Cookie interacts with other dogs, it would be hard to say. I would recommend bringing her to a local park to see how she reacts- is she interested? Does she want to play? Or does she avoid and shy away from the other dogs? This may give you some idea as to how she may interact with a new dog in the house. If you do decide to get a new dog, I highly recommend bringing Cookie with you to the shelter or other place you are looking for one. Most shelters will allow you to introduce your current dog to any potential new family members to see if they are going to get along. As for age, it really depends more on your dog's personality and that of the new dog. An older dog that is super hyper may not work well compared to a very calm puppy, etc. As with any new pet, take introductions slow. Even if they got along outside the home, they may still have some scuffles over shared items, spaces, etc. Separating the two until both are calm, and then trying again to reintroduce them can help ensure things go more smoothly during the transition.

I am sorry to hear you lost a dog recently. Whether to get a puppy or an adult will depend on your lifestyle/schedule and the personality of your other dogs.
