Is an indoor dog more likely to run away than an outdoor dog?

I couldn't quite decipher what you were asking about with the chow chow or shar pei, but can give some comments about keeping a dog outside. My experience is similar to yours in regard to allowing a dog free-range. Dogs are very territorial and do not like to wander too far outside of their home unless necessary. Ensuring the dog is desexed, has a good shelter, has adequate food and plenty of water will usually keep a dog from wandering off and getting lost. In my experience, hounds are more likely to run away than any other breeds. I think 570 acres is plenty of room for a dog and it's unlikely that they will run away as long as they have been there long enough to know it's their home. I would avoid setting the dog loose right away in a new home, because they may run off in search of their old home. I hope that answers your question well. Hello, it is not uncommon for unneutered male dogs to roam. This is a natural behavior. Neutering him may decrease some of the desire to roam, but if he has been doing this for awhile, it may already be ingrained in his behavior. I would consider getting a fence, either a phsyical fence, or an electric fence, to try to contain your dog. Or you might consider making him an indoor dog and only having him go outside when supervised. Working at an obedience class may help you train him to return when you call, but I don't think it is going to stop him from wandering when you aren't outside with him.

No one can answer this question for you with 100% certainty as there are too many variables. It would depend a lot on the dog's personality, how much interaction you have with him on a daily basis and how well he gets on with the other dogs. There is never a guarantee with any animal - you will just have to try and see how it goes. I can tell you that you have a better chance of him sticking around and not running away if he is neutered. Small dog breeds tend to run away less then large breed, but this is a very general statement and it can't guaranty in any way that your dog will stay on your property regardless of the breed. you do have plenty of options, these are just examples: jack Russel, Pug, Maltese, Pomeranian, French Bulldog.

Hello, and thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Coming from a fellow Siberian Husky owner, I think you could do great with this breed. I can tell you’re already thinking about how to provide enough mental and physical stimulation, which is the most important part of having a high energy breed. They can do just fine in a smaller house, as long as they’re given enough opportunities to run! Keep in mind though, that many huskies are escape artists, and often find their way out of fenced yards. I personally had to invest in an invisible fence in addition to the chain link, to keep my little runaway contained! The invisible fence taught her to stop testing the chain link. Your dog will likely need to have some good stimulation before and after your work days if it is kept in the fenced area alone, such as chasing a ball or going for a run. I can tell you from experience that a Chow Chow would not be a good idea! I have a Chow, and they are terribly difficult to train because they are so stubborn. When she gets the chance to be off leash, she will take off and not come back. I can't tell you how many times I've had to chase her down. Sharpeis are also very stubborn dogs and hard to train, so I would not recommend that breed either. Your friend needs a dog that is easy to train so he can take them off leash. I'd recommend a Golden Retriever or a Lab. I hope this helps!

This is a difficult question to answer because it's all based upon her and your temperament. Huskies in general tend to be very active dogs who can become destructive when bored. They need lots of daily exercise to meet their energy requirements. They can also be very vocal dogs. Keep in mind, every dog is an individual so she may not act like this. ANY dog who is bored may develop bad habits. Being an outside dog means that she has been able to run around and has likely not experienced much structure in her life since she was not inside with the family. Living inside means rules, structure and routine. It's also unknown if she is housebroken or not. Taking on any pet is a big responsibility. Many huskies live indoors just fine. If you decide to adopt her, you will need to commit to daily exercise and be prepared for some bumps along the way. You may want to take off work for the first week so you can be home with her as she adjusts. You may also look into doggie daycare or a dog walker to come by and check on her during your work day until you know how she is adjusting.
