How can I identify lumps and are there common places where they appear? I try to keep an eye out for them but i’m never sure what they feel like.

For example lipomas, papillomas, low grade mast cells can be quite common, hystiocytomas (usually in young dogs though) and skin cysts can be as well.
There are many others skin benign masses arising from the superficial skin layers which are completely benign. A skin biopsy is usually needed to determine the underlying nature.
