Why are Huskies so vocal and dramatic? Is their howling normal?

Huskies are known for their loud, overly dramatic vocalizations so I think this behavior is normal for Fergus. I would not be too concerned about it unless he starts acting aggressively while being so vocal.

Behavior such as this can indicate anxiety, excessive energy or potentially the need to urgently pee or poop. I would recommend taking him outside to see if he needs to go to the bathroom. Unless you have a fenced-in area for him I would probably take him on a leash in case there is an animal in the vicinity that is causing him to feel anxious. If his behavior continues into tomorrow, I would consult with a veterinarian to ensure there is nothing going on such as a urinary tract infection or diarrhea.

You can perhaps help with anti-anxiety medications such as Trazodone which can be used on an as needed basis. Calming treats are not particularly helpful so I am not surprised that you have not noticed a difference with those. Dogs howl at sirens for a variety of reasons. Some dogs associate the sound of a siren with a bad memory and howl at the siren to "chase" it away. Other dogs instinctively howl at sirens because to them it sounds like a pack call. Whether or not your dog howls at sirens depends on his breed, age, comfort and security and of course hearing. However, research has shown that even though dogs hear very differently from people, the sound of a siren does not in fact hurt their ears.

Hi there. I'm sorry that you have had to give up a Chihuahua in the past. That is always a very hard decision to make. I'm not sure if you've already gotten the Husky or not, but I can definitely give you my thoughts. Huskies are a very vocal breed so it is possible that this pet will be a barker as well. Huskies need a lot of exercise and will need regular grooming as well. Being a pure breed, they can't have more problems than a mixed breed including allergies, cancers, behavioral issues, and many more. But these things can happen with any pet so it's hard to predict. The basics would be vaccinations, annual examinations, spay or neuter, flea and tick prevention, and heartworm prevention. Any time a dog exhibits a behavior for which he is rewarded, he is likely to repeat it. If he does something and is corrected (never punished!!!) fir it AS IT IS HAPPENING ONLY, he is unlikely to repeat it. But if he goes wild at night when no one is around and he is not scolded, there is no reason for him to think that there is anything wrong with what he's doing and he will do it again. Reprimanding him after-the-fact is counterproductive, as he will not make the connection and this will only cause him to be anxious and act out more. Your best bet is to put hi in a crate for the night. He may howl and carry on, but you must ignore this (assuming that his bathroom needs, etc. have been met). After a few nights of not getting any attention at all from you when he makes a racket, he will stop and settle down in his crate. The only other option is for you to stay up at night so you can catch him at it and correct him right away. Siberians are very active, and this is not unusual (though it is extreme).

Hello. Just like in people, personalities differ in pets, as well. While we can generalize about specific breeds of dogs, this just does not always prove true. Sometimes you can guess at a dog's general adult behavior by how they act as a puppy & maybe you are just really intuitive at picking out calm dogs, but as long as the health of the dog or puppy is normal, I would just be happy that your pup is not a maniac.
