Should I worry if a husky puppy barks at me at the dog park?

Hello. Just like in people, personalities differ in pets, as well. While we can generalize about specific breeds of dogs, this just does not always prove true. Sometimes you can guess at a dog's general adult behavior by how they act as a puppy & maybe you are just really intuitive at picking out calm dogs, but as long as the health of the dog or puppy is normal, I would just be happy that your pup is not a maniac. Hi there. I'm sorry that you have had to give up a Chihuahua in the past. That is always a very hard decision to make. I'm not sure if you've already gotten the Husky or not, but I can definitely give you my thoughts. Huskies are a very vocal breed so it is possible that this pet will be a barker as well. Huskies need a lot of exercise and will need regular grooming as well. Being a pure breed, they can't have more problems than a mixed breed including allergies, cancers, behavioral issues, and many more. But these things can happen with any pet so it's hard to predict. The basics would be vaccinations, annual examinations, spay or neuter, flea and tick prevention, and heartworm prevention. Huskies can be very smart and stubborn. It sounds like Nebula may be testing the waters and also potentially showing some resource guarding or play aggression. The best thing you can do for her is to take her to obedience classes. It will help with her socialization as well as getting her to listen to you. You can also hire a trainer to help you work with her. Proper training is super important at this age so that bad behavior does not become a permanent habit as an adult. Also making sure she has plenty of exercise is important. Going for regular walks, dog parks, and even agility centers are great! Just make sure she stays as cool as possible with the summer heat!

As an unneutered male, he is starting to feel the effects of male hormones, which can manifest in aggressive behavior. You can try to help him acclimate to other dogs by introducing them in a controlled manner, with both dogs on leashes and through a fence initially until you can see how they will react to one another. Some barking and growling is normal but by reassuring them both without getting too excited can help. The more excited you become, the more he will, and he may feel he needs to be protective of you. Additionally, work with your dog away from other dogs. Play, take him for runs (Huskies are born runners and are very high energy, as I'm sure you are aware.), get him involved in obedience, play fetch, get him involved in dog agility, flyball, anything and everything to keep him well exercised and tied. This will help him be calm and well behaved the rest of the time since a tired dog is a happy dog. And, unless you plan to breed him because he is an exemplary example of his breed, consider getting him neutered. This will remove the primary source of the hormones most responsible for aggression and will also help with other behavioral issues in the future, as well as reducing the urge to roam in search of females. This will keep him safer and less likely to be hit by a car if he does get out on his own.

It's normal for puppies this age to be friendly and not bark - if she were barking at people at this young age, I would be very concerned that she would grow up to be fearful and anxious around strangers. She should start to alert bark when she's older, usually around 10-12 months of age.

The dog park can be a scary experience at first, and if Bella is under socialized may be a bit overwhelming. Many dog parks do have small dog only areas which may be less stressful for Bella as she is a smaller breed. You can start by simply walking around the park (but not entering it if fenced) just to get Bella used to the sights and smells and other dogs around. If she seems calm or excited, you can then enter the park. Often times dogs will be greeted at once by several others, which may be a little overwhelming, so encouraging Bella to walk around and keep moving can help keep the pile off of her. If she becomes too stressed out, nervous, or begins to snap or growl, leaving the park is best to avoid a fight or more stress. Some dogs really like the park, while others don't have as much fun, so don't feel bad if she doesn't enjoy being there. There are many other things you can do such as long walks, games of fetch, and visiting locations together to encourage acitvity and mental stimulation with less stress.

If she's just shying away from head petting, that's not a hopeless case. Most dogs are not very comfortable with someone reaching for the top of their head, and it could just be she isn't used to it, or related to some pain such as teething, as you suggested. A good thing new people meeting her can do is to bend down and either offer their hand for sniffing, or offer her a treat, and then to gently pet under her chin instead if she'll accept that. You can also have new people meeting her offering a treat and let her approach first, and then praise and treat if she accepts petting without shying away. If she becomes too fearful or stressed, stopping all petting and giving her a chance to relax before trying again can help. Group classes are useful for socialization with other pets and people in a structured environment, so even if it doesn't address the specific issue, it can help with overall social behavior. I'd just keep up with positive reinforcement training, having new people approach her slowly, and praising and treating when she shows interest in them, without pushing her to interact if she becomes stressed or fearful.
