Is human shampoo making my dog's skin itchy? What can I use?

I'm afraid it depends on what is causing the skin irritation - without more information, it's hard to give much specific advice. In general, bathing in aloe and oatmeal dog shampoo is a good, safe option that may provide some relief for some skin problems. Often, though, a diagnosis and prescription medication from your veterinarian may be needed in order to determine what is causing the problem and treat it effectively.

It is not recommended. The nor.al pH and oil levels of dog skin is different to humans and dog shampoos are adjusted for this. Human and baby shampoos can cause drying, scaling and irritation but if you must use something in an emergency, diluted baby shampoo would be the safest alternative

Baby shampoos do tend to be fairly gentle for puppies, but any dog can be sensitive to any shampoo and it’s possible that it caused irritation or dried his skin out more. You may want to see if your vet carries a dog specific shampoo like Dermallay or HyLyt. It is common for young puppies to have dryer skin and act itchy, and most outgrow it within a few months. If he has developed skin wounds I’d recommend rechecking with your vet to make sure he doesn’t have a skin infection or parasites that weren’t obvious on his previous exam.

I would lean towards getting a shampoo such as Duoxo Calm for a maintenance shampoo. This particular shampoo will help strengthen the skin to keep it well hydrated and to prevent dandruff and itching secondary to dry skin. I would not put any human prescribed medications on Nala as there may be ingredients or chemicals in them that are harmful to her. If she has dry skin, a soothing aloe or oatmeal shampoo can help with dry skin, as well as supplementing with vitamin E or fish oils to help improve the coat. If you suspect mites or parasites, treating those and getting them under control can help as well. You can also place an Elizabethan (cone) collar or T-shirt on Nala to keep her from licking and scratching to reduce irritation as well.
