How long can a housebroken adult dog stay home alone safely?

It really depends on the age of the dog. If it is an adult dog than he can probably be home 6-8 hours alone without needing someone to take him out. If it is a puppy, than he would probably need someone to let him out to go to the bathroom during the day. It also depends on the dog's temperment as some dogs need more attention and exercise than others.

Congratulations on our new puppy Twinkles! Twinkles is still a baby and she will not be able to hold it from 8-4. At her age, she can only hold it about 4 hours. If possible, have someone stay with her or some to check on her, let her out...etc during the day. It's important to try to establish good housebreaking routines early and stick to a schedule. Most dog breeds will do just fine with this work schedule - most people do work 8 hour days, so this isn't uncommon at all :) A puggle would be a fine choice, as they are usually quite friendly and easy-going little dogs in my experience. The most difficult time will be when you first bring the puppy home, since most pups won't be able to "hold it" that long without a potty break or two. You may want to see if you could take some vacation time when you first bring your new puppy home to focus on bonding and potty training before you have to start leaving them alone. Another option would be to have a neighbor, relative, or dog-sitter stop by at least once during the day to take the puppy out. Most dogs can go 8 hours without a potty break by 6-8 months of age, so as long as you have a plan until then things should be just fine.

Thanks for using coach! Lady will need access to go potty throughout the day. If she has access to potty pads that will be sufficient. She also needs lots of freshwater. Because of her size she really needs to be fed 3 to 4 times a day so her blood sugar doesn’t get too low. I would see if you can find someone to come and feed her several times a day. Also, that many hours alone she will probably be pretty bored and may end up being distructive to her surroundings. This means she may eat her poop, chew up her blankets and pee pads, or cry for hours. I would set up a dog walker or find a friend that can help pet sit to break up her alone time. I didn't see an age for your pet posted? If this is a puppy less than 8 months old this is potentially too long to crate them because most puppies can only hold their bladder for a few hours depending on their age. So having accidents in the crate is desensitizing them to sleeping where they urinate and defecate which can lead to problems house training your puppy. However if this is an adult dog over the age of 1 years old and there is a legitimate reason to crate (gets into things still in the house, raids the trash, etc), then crating him for this long is ok; however I would try to work on training your pet to be trusted more when you aren't at home. Crating for long periods of time, all the time, increases chances of obesity due to lack of activity, boredom, and isn't good for pets long term for their psyche and happiness. We typically only recommend crating puppies during their earlier months because it is for their safety and well being to remain out of trouble until they learn how to behave.

Hi there. I'm not sure if I understand what you're asking. With a 2 month old puppy, I wouldn't leave him home alone for more than 2-3 hours at a time if possible, as he won't be able to hold his bladder longer than that at this age.
