How can I help my new rescue hound settle and reduce his anxiety?

Hi there! Betty sure sounds shaken up by her new housemate. There are some natural supplements you can try to help alleviate her anxiety. Zylkene is a natural supplement that your veterinarian can prescribe. It can be very helpful in these types of situations. Another product called, Canine Compsure, is also a natural supplement that may be helpful. I would try these products first. They should help with Betty's anxiety with her new friend. If those don't work, you may want to call a trainer in to evaluate Betty's behavior around the new cat. They may have some advice as to how you can help her work through it her issues. Your vet can also perform a body condition score to see if she is at a healthy weight for her size and help monitor any changes needed. 2) Since she is having a lot of anxiety and having trouble with basic obedience, speaking with a trainer or veterinary behaviorist in person is your best option. They can work with you one-on-one to tailor a plan to help reduce your pup's anxiety, and a veterinary behaviorist can also utilize medication as needed in conjunction with a training plan. Training techniques such as BAT (Behavioral Adjustment Training) are great for helping desensitize dogs to the triggers that cause anxiety. This can also help with her fear toward you or other people as well. 3) Once she has settled in a bit and the anxiety is under control, a basic obedience class together may help so that you can learn to better communicate with each other in a safe, positive manner. This can also help the two of you bond a bit better and gain trust. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You’ve already named a few of the problems. Neutering probably won’t help the energy level but may help with the dominance actions. Anxiety is huge and often requires anti-anxiety medication and always requires some form of training. In some instances, training will not be effective until you start some sort of medication so I recommend speaking to your vet. Finally, even though you do much more than many owners in terms of exercise (great work!), it still may not be enough for Stitch, depending on his breed and demeanor. Consider dog parks (once neutered), having him run along a bicycle, etc. Finally, give it time. Many breeds do not settle down until 2-3 years of age, but most eventually do settle down. Poor Jasper! It sounds like he's quite stressed and anxious at the moment. Without more information, it's hard to say if this is simply due to all of the changes he's experienced recently (new home, new owner, etc.) or if he has some generalized anxiety issues. I would recommend giving him some time to settle in - this behavior may resolve over the next several days once he has a chance to adjust to his new living situation. You can help by giving him some tasty things to chew on (large rawhide chews, bully sticks, etc.) as chewing is a relaxing activity for dogs - just make sure to give him his own space while he chews, and don't allow your other dog to bother him. You may also want to try a DAP pheromone collar along with a natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure. If there is no improvement in his anxiety within the next week or so, it would be best to consult with a veterinary behaviorist who can evaluate him in person and help you put together a detailed plan to work on his issues. Congrats on your new dog, but it does sound like Iris has severe separation anxiety. I would have her seen by a vet for this. The vet can give you a referral to a professional behavioral expert to work on training techniques to lessen her anxiety. The vet can also discuss the use of anti-anxiety medications in Iris. I would also recommend getting a DAP diffuser. This diffuses pheromones in the room which helps dogs with anxiety. A Sentry calming collar can be used as well, which releases the calming pheromones when in contact with her skin.
