My German Shepherd still has diarrhea. What food or diet will help?

It is possible that Chloe is having an adverse food reaction and might not be tolerating the Purina Lamb and Rice. I recommend having your veterinarian check a sample of her diarrhea to make sure no parasites are present, but if everything looks okay, you might consider a prescription hypoallergenic diet trial. If that doesn't help, German Shepherds are known to occasionally have some chronic diarrhea that can be due to enzyme deficiencies, so further testing might be warranted. Hopefully a simple food change might be enough.

Causes for diarrhea could include irritation to something that Luka ate, intestinal parasites, stress, or a tummy bug. I would start by feeding the same formulation of food for 1 week. If he is still having diarrhea off an on in 1 week, it may time to have Luka examined by a veterinarian - take a fresh stool sample with you to the appointment so the vet can test it for intestinal parasties. German Shepherd Dogs are predisposed to a disease called Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) which causes chronic diarrhea and weight loss due to maldigestion. I am sorry Chingo is not feeling well. With Chingo being older I would recommend taking him to the vet for a good exam and some basic testing like blood work. IT is possible that parasites, gastric upset or even infection has caused the diarrhea. However with his older age I would be concerned about possibly a more sever underlying disease. You can try an over the counter probiotic with a bland diet for 24-48 hours of boiled chicken and white rice. However if the diarrhea does not improve Chingo really needs to go to a vet. Poor girl. Many things can cause loose stool including intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) or Giardia just to name a few. I would recommend rechecking the stool but also ensuring a Giardia test is also ran. Then I would discuss with your vet about any other symptoms such as weight loss, appetite changes, etc, to offer more clues as to what to test for next. A blood panel may also offer some insight as to what is causing the loose stools. You didn't mention that your vet treated Echo with anything, so I would recommend starting off with Metronidazole and a probiotic to see if this resolves the problem before delving into other extensive testing. No you don't have to feed both wet and dry food. If the wet food gives Mercy the runs, then simply stop giving it and stick with the dry kibble from now on. However there is a possibility that the wet food is not to blame for the loose stool, at which point you can try giving her 1-2tsp of canned pumpkin (not the filling) to her food daily to add fiber and help form the stools. If this still doesn't help then it's best to have her stool examined by your vet.
