My Great Pyrenees puppy has leg pain. Could it be panosteitis?

If it just started you can let him rest for a few days with minimal walking and minimal physical exercise, if it does not improve within 3-4 days you will have to take him to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, he might need pain killers for a few days. if the vet think it's something more serious such as a fracture, joint injury or foreign body, he might recommend to have an xray done as well.

If he is experiencing hindlimb lameness, it is most likely his knee or hip. The most common cause of lameness we see in large breeds is stifle injury secondary to a crucuate ligament tear or degenerative joint disease of the hips. You should have him evaluated by your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause and discuss treatment plan.

Poor Boston! I recommend to have her examined by her veterinarian since the limping has been going on for a week and she is acting depressed. She may be in pain. Limping could be due to an injury but her breed can be prone to several painful growth abnormalities. The doctor may need an x-ray to check her bones and joints for abnormalities. It could be that Loui has strained or torn a ligament, or it could be that he strained a muscle. There's also a possibility that he could have broken a bone. The only way to know for sure is to have him seen by a vet. I would call the vet in the morning to make an appointment for him. I hope this helps!

Hello. It is impossible to try & diagnose Bonnie's problems without a full exam. You see, some very large breed puppies can have issues with their bones & joints, something similar to growing pains in children. She may also have early issues with hip or even elbow dysplasia. She should be evaluated at your earliest convenience so that the proper diagnosis can be made. Once this has been done, medications, diet, environmental changes will all be looked at to try & help Bonnie grow into the healthiest puppy possible. Signs of panosteitis are: lameness that seems to shift legs, decreased appetite, and sometimes lethargy. Treatment involves supportive care which is the use of pain management (NSAIDS \- Opiates) and strict cage rest for 2-6 weeks or until the pet recovers. Joint supplements don't have side effects that we see in pets, except for some pets have a sensitive stomach to them. I am not sure what you mean when you say hat your pets ankle and hock join together. Radiographs of the leg can easily confirm a diagnosis of panosteitis. Yes, this can be a sign of poor hip conformation or hip dysplasia. Usually dogs with hip joint laxity run with both rear legs together or bunny hop. As Coco is still growing the pain also could be due to panosteitis which is pain in the bones from growing too fast. I recommend switching her to adult large breed dog food so she will grow slower. She will still reach her full size, it just may take a little longer. Adult food is fine for all ages so you do not need to be worried, she will still get the nutrition she needs. Your veterinarian can feel her hip joints for laxity, but X-rays are not conclusive until she is six months or older. It is best to exercise Coco on a leash and prevent running and jumping. Your veterinarian may also prescribe pain medication to make her. more comfortable. While hip dysplasia can cause arthritis later in life, many dogs go through short painful episodes, then they are pain free for long periods of time. If she has poor hip conformation she shouldn't have puppies as they may have bad hips also. Keeping Coco active, thin and well muscled in addition to joint supplements and pain medication when needed will give Coco the best chance to live a normal active life.
