Why is my golden retriever still panting an hour after playing?

Hi there. Breathing hard or panting at rest can be due to a number of different things. Some common possibilities in an older dog would include hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, liver problems, or heart disease. It's also possible that he's simply hot, or that he is somewhat painful or uncomfortable due to his arthritis. I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam when you are able to. Your veterinarian can do blood work to check for these problems and get him started on appropriate treatment if any abnormalities are found.

This is probably normal for your puppy but if you are concerned then I would recommend having her examined by your veterinarian. If he seems to be breathing heavier than normal then he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can take a chest x-ray to evaluate his heart and lungs. It is not normal for a dog to breath heavy for an hour after exercise so I think you should definitely have him evaluated by a vet.

I would recommend that Rebel get checked out by a vet. It is possible that these symptoms could be completely normal, but it is also possible that they could be caused by heart disease, lung disease, a narrowed trachea, among a few other things. One thing you can do to help out the vet is to get a sleeping respiratory rate. What you do is wait until Rebel is completely asleep (not just resting and not during a dream) and count how many times his chest moves/breaths in 1 minute. If the number is over 25, this would support heart or lung disease. An x-ray would help your vet determine if there is narrowing to the trachea.

Hi. Margo is a sweet name. Sometimes, yes, behaviors can change with heat cycles. But I would worry if she is whining more and panting more that something is bothering her. This could be new nervousness about something, it could be that something is painful, it could be she isn't feeling well, or even that her anal glands could be bothering her. The best thing would be to make her an appointment with your veterinarian and have her get a full examination. You will then know if there is something to be worried about or not. Dogs cannot sweat to release heat, so they have to pant to breathe off heat. As long as Lassie can settle down and act normally, eat, drink, etc, he should be OK. I hope this is helpful!

Hello there. Sorry Eron is having this issue. This is not an emergency service so if you are really worried about him you should always take him to a veterinarian right away! That being said, dogs can pant for many reasons. 1. Cooling themselves off 2. Pain, injury 3. Underlying medical condition like heart disease, thyroid disease, cushing's disease, respiratory disease, etc 4. Stress 5. Excitement So, it may nothing or it may a sign of something serious. You know your dog best. If he seems like he can't get comfortable and he seems stressed then you should get him to a vet right away. If he seems otherwise comfortable and he is just lying there panting he is probably fine and you should continue to monitor him and if he keeps doing it then you should have him checked out by your vet.
