My dog's tramadol ran out. Can I give him my human tramadol?

Poor Wookie. It is never a good idea to start a medication without having checked the patient before. All the medication have side effects and have to be carefully prescribed and given only for the appropriate disease. There are different medication against pain and Tramadol is one of those but recent studies suggest might not be as effective as we thought, there are other more effective medication. I recommend to have Wookie checked by your veterinarian to asses the level of pain and prescribed the correct medication taking in account all Wookie history and concurrent heath problems, if present. I would not give Scruffy aspirin. Even though it says it's for dogs, it still can cause GI ulcers and bleeding, and it's not safe to give to him. As for the Tramadol, I can't wait whether or not it's safe to give him nor can I tell you for how long. That's illegal for me to do so because I can't see him in person. Do not give him Tramadol without having it prescribed to him by the vet. Only the vet can decided if that's safe for him to take. I would have him seen by a vet to discuss safe pain relief for him.

In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. It's impossible for me to say if tramadol is an appropriate drug for her, and she could have underlying health issues I know nothing about that would make this a very unsafe drug for her to take. I also never recommend giving dogs a human pain medication unless specifically prescribed by a vet. If you feel she is in a considerable amount of pain, the best thing to do is take her into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her tonight. Otherwise, rest her as much as possible. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to potty on a leash only and bring her right back in when she's done. You can try putting a cold compress on her shoulder if she will let you to see if that helps with the pain. Have her seen by a vet tomorrow if possible or first thing Monday. Unfortunately there are no over the counter pain medications that I would recommend - while aspirin can be given to dogs it has a high risk for causing stomach ulcers with even a couple of doses and it will limit what your vet might be able to prescribe. While you could consider starting a gluocosamine supplement or fish oil it won't work right away. I think your best bet is to wait until you see your vet. Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (like aspirin, but for dogs) which is given for certain types of pain such as arthritis. However Carprofen is excreted via the kidneys and if it is to be used, the dog receiving it needs to have a small blood test to verify that his kidneys are working properly. Also carprofen can cause stomach ulcers in some dogs. So unless your vet prescribes these medications for your dog, please do not give them. However, should your vet prescribe those medications for your other dog, you can tell him that you have them and then be informed of the proper dosage to give.
