How to give my Maltese puppy vitamins? Food, water, or drops?

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! A lot of breeders cause panic in owners that purchase their small or toy breed puppies over the concern for hypoglycemia (or low blood sugar). If Lexi is eating well then she doesn't need sugar added to her water. I recommend feeding small and toy breed puppies multiple small meals through out the day until they are 4 months old/ After 4 months you can just feed 3 times per day. I find the biggest cause of low blood sugar in these puppies are intestinal parasites, specifically coccidia. I recommend taking a stool sample to your Vet for testing. And keeping a tube of Nutri-cal around is better than adding sugar to the water in my opinion. I would not generally recommend using supplements unless a specific condition has been diagnosed which would benefit from nutritional treatment. I would recommend feeding a high quality, balanced food which has been formulated for his specific size and age. Adding multivitamins to a good diet can lead to accidental excesses and imbalances and can be harmful

If you feed a good quality puppy food, you shouldn't need to supplement with additional vitamins. Any excess will typically be excreted in the urine. If you feed a homemade diet, vitamin supplementation is recommended. Review the ingredients with your vet to confirm proper dosing.

It is not recommended to give vitamins and supplements to a puppy. Lilo should only be getting a puppy formulated dog food, which will provide her with all the supplements and vitamins she needs to grow properly. It is not recommended to give puppies any multivitamins. That is because this can lead to giving him too many vitamins, thus have adverse affects on his growth. I would feed Akki a puppy formulated food, which will provide him will all the nutrients and vitamins he needs to grow.

Usually there is no need to supplement vitamins if your puppy is fed with a balanced and complete diet. I normally see in practice more problems due to incorrect vitamin supplementation than hypovitaminosis. What you can do is feed her a joint diet such as Hill's Science Diet j/d which has all the joint supplements and is usually palatable and dogs like it. If not, you can get supplements that are pills and not chewables that you can administer in food or perhaps by pilling her. Good luck and have a great day!
