My young German Shepherd struggles to jump. Is it hip dysplasia?

This X-ray shows she has poor hip conformation or hip dysplasia and hip arthritis. Unfortunately this is a common orthopedic problem in German Shepard dogs and othe large breeds. Most dogs respond well to weight loss if needed and dog arthritis medication prescribed by your veterinarian. By keeping her active and moving she will maintain her muscle mass which will support her hips so there is less bone rubbing, which will result in less pain. Giving joint supplements like Dasuquin or Cosequin can help in addition to Omega 3 or fish oil which will reduce some of the inflammation. Physical therapy with a rehab veterinarian is effective in maintaining her muscles and help reduce the limping. I am very sorry to hear that Jake seems less eager to jump then he used to be. This is a very common problem with older small- medium dogs. Though it is difficulty to say exactly what is the cause, I would be worried about osteoarthritis in Jake's hip joints. A vet would be able to diagnose with a physical examination as well as potentially using an X-ray to visualise the changes in Jake's lower back, Such as slipped discs, knees, and hip joints. Because Jake seems otherwise very well in himself I would advise adding a supplement to his diet to help with joint health. There are several of these on the market currently. Look for Glucosamine & Chondroitin in the labels, and always buy a pet formulated brand, as doses are different for humans. I would also advise a change in his exercise regime to promote lean muscle mass development. Muscle wastage is a common contributing factor in older dogs. More frequent, but shorter walks will benefit Jake. For example, two 20 minute walks, One in the morning and one in the evening If you notice that Jake is particularly sore after a walk you can apply a cool compress to hip area I hope this answer was helpful and if you believe that Jake is not benefiting from these tactics I advise a trip to the veterinarian to ensure noting more is occuing.

There are many possible reasons but especially in German shepherds, hip dysplasia would be a serious concern, especially if she is reluctant to jump up or stretch. Most muscle injuries would be expected to be improving over 3-4days and xrays would be advisable if not settling

Bella can definitely have hip problems with her symptoms. With the X-rays provided it is not the most appropriate way to determine hip dysplasia. The best X-rays are sedated X-rays with the hind legs being extended straight and tilted slightly in. I would recommend when you spay her Bella you have them X-ray her hips at the same time to determine this. Once you have these X-rays if hip dysplasia is found, you can talk to a surgeon to find out what is the next step for Bella. Poor Violet! She is in pain. There could be several causes including an injury to her back, a calcified disc or a pinched nerve. Since she can’t talk and tell you what is wrong, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian today who can also give her medication to make her feel better. Large breed growing dogs can develop a common problem called panosteitis. This is caused by fast growing bones. However, German Shepherds are also known for elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon to make sure that there are no other concerns. Panosteitis can come and go for months. Poor Thelma Louise! She is a large breed dog, and they can be prone to tearing their cranial cruciate ligament in their knee. That can happen suddenly. It could also be she has a problem with her hips, as hip problems such as hip dysphasia is common in large breed dogs. Because this has been going on for a couple of weeks, it's time to see the vet. She is showing you she is in pain because she has trouble standing up and can't jump onto a bed. I would take her into a vet this weekend or first thing Monday. The vet can diagnose what is causing her pain, and can treat her for it. The vet can also prescribe pain medications.
