Why is my German Shepherd's skin infection not clearing up?

It sounds like Tyson likely has an underlying condition that is causing his body to react and thus you are not seeing improvement in the skin. The four main things that will cause persistent skin issues are flea allergy, environmental allergy, food allergy and hypothyroidism. I recommend to start ruling each one out. German Shepherds are notoriously sensitive dogs and you can’t know which one is causing it without checking each one out. I recommend to rule out fleas first with an oral flea prevention like Nexgard or Simparica. Even just a few fleas can cause a big problem. Then food would likely be next. I recommend a specific diet called Ultamino. Environmental allergies are more difficult to rule out and thyroid problems would be uncommon (but not impossible) in a dog Tyson’s age. That looks like a deep infection and I recommend to have Lori examined by the veterinarian. Sometimes these infections are related to a bacteria or yeast infection. They can also be related to skin mites or an autoimmune condition. Generally deep infection require antibiotics. It’s very important to make sure you protect the area from any licking or scratching as this will make it worse. The doctor may recommend a few simple diagnostics to determine the cause of the infection and then provide appropriate treatment. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Oh my. Poor guy. This infection is severe. I would have cultures taken of this skin immediately if the broad spectrum antibiotics that your vet gave aren't working. I would also consider getting biopsies of this thing. The area may need surgical debridement as well, because there is some diseased and necrotic (dead) tissue there that will prevent this from healing well if it isn't removed. I am so sorry your pet has such an aggressive skin condition. This certainly will need further medical management from your vet for sure. Instead of the neomac i would recommend a medication called Itraconazole that is taken orally for 3-4 weeks, it's more effective for this sort of problem. i would also recommend to treat possible skin mites which are often the primary cause.

This certainly does look very uncomfortable for poor Gizmo! Given that he has had testing and treatment with no resolution of the problem, I would recommend a consult with a veterinary dermatologist. You can find one in your area on www. acvd.org.

I'm not sure why you think stray dogs don't get skin infections, and if they do, it cures itself. That's not true. I have seen numerous stray dogs with horrendous skin problems, and some have had to be put to sleep due to the severity of the infection. Others needed to be treated to have it cleared up. Now some breeds of dogs are more prone to certain health conditions such as skin infections caused by allergies, and unfortunately GSDs are one of those breeds. I hope this helps.
