My 7-month German Shepherd puppy bites. Is it normal? How to stop?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 1 day old | 105 lbs

My 7 month old German Shepherd uses his mouth too much. He always comes for my arm and starts soft and then adds more force eventually. He thinks it is a game since his tail is always waging. He doesn’t get as much exercise as he would like to but he spends most of his time in a decent sized back yard. Is bitting ok for him at that age? Will it eventually stop as he ages and becomes more mature? Is lack of exercise causing this behavior? Is there any tips to stop puppy bitting?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Although puppies will want to chew and bite, this behavior should be corrected with a little training. Keeping your hands away (placing them behind your back or folded) when he tries to go for a play bite will help eliminate the behavior. Also, making sure he has plenty of tactile toys around he enjoys to chew on will help as well. Lastly, a German Shepard needs PLENTY of exercise, so I would make sure he gets walked at least once daily (more is better). All of these behavioral tips can help decrease and eliminate the biting behavior.

I hope this helps!
