My German Shepherd pulls. Can I adopt a Doberman or Labrador?

GSDs are very headstrong dogs as you are seeing, and it's great that you have done obedient walk training with your GSD! It's not in their blood that they always try to pull on the leash, as not all GSDs will pull, but they are very energetic dogs. Given that your dog still isn't behaving correctly 100% of the time on the leash, I would wait to adopt another GSD until yours in under control fully on the leash. That will make it easier for you to handle walking two of them at the same time :-)

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I personally prefer Labrador Retrievers though German Shepherds can make great pets for the right owner. Since you already have a German Shepherd and know how to work well with them then getting another German Shepherd would make sense. German Shepherds in general can be quite strong willed just like you described lunging at people and yes a female could do it as well. Labradors are easier to train. Good luck!

Most dogs do well with a companion in the home. It will take some initial training on your part to get Bruno and a new puppy used to each other. I would recommend not leaving the new pup alone with the older dog until they are used to each other. It is also important to make sure the older dog still gets plenty of attention and exercise when the new puppy comes along. Good luck!

Damon is still a puppy so I do not recommend not leaving him off of a leash. You can always get Damon a gentle leader to help with the pulling of the leash. The reason for this is because if they see an animal or someone they can run off and either scare someone, get hurt or always can get hit by a car. No, I'm afraid that this is not a behavior that dogs "grow out of" as they get older - they need training to work on this problem if you want it to get better. This involves using treats to reward them for calm behavior as you pass by people or other dogs on the street. It can be difficult to do this on your own if you don't have much experience, so I would recommend getting in touch with a good reward-based trainer in your area who can help you in person.

You can use a head harness, such as a Gentle Leader or Halti, to exert more control and to easily redirect Bruno away from any stimuli. Work with a trainer to reinforce basic commands, especially "sit", "stay" and "leave it".

Those breeds are calm, not aggressive and good with other dogs in general, two GSD is in most cases asking for troubles, when together they could get out of control and even become aggressive toward each other, strangers, other dogs or even family members.
