Does my German Shepherd's leash pulling stop with age or maturity?

He is reaching maturity at this point and this challenging behavior will continue past 2 years old as he tries to test the boundaries and become the one in charge. If you let him get away with such, it will only get worse. The best thing to do is reward him when he does not, and give him treats to encourage this behavior. Make sure if he does you make him stop and sit and calm down and keep doing this until he learns he will not get to go anywhere until he does it correctly You can also look into getting him a pinch collar or gentle leader or halti. The latter two go around the nose, so every time he pulls, it pulls his nose between his legs and forces him to stop or go backwards.

Well Bruno is still very young and learning how to behave. I would recommend getting a trainer involved to help you with basic commands (sit, come,stay). Also waking on a leash takes time. Try and use positive rewards like treats.

GSDs are very headstrong dogs as you are seeing, and it's great that you have done obedient walk training with your GSD! It's not in their blood that they always try to pull on the leash, as not all GSDs will pull, but they are very energetic dogs. Given that your dog still isn't behaving correctly 100% of the time on the leash, I would wait to adopt another GSD until yours in under control fully on the leash. That will make it easier for you to handle walking two of them at the same time :-)

Yes, shepherds are a very dominant breed. You need to get this behavior under control before she gets much older. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! German Shepherds are highly intelligent an highly trainable dogs. I recommend hiring a trainer and nipping this in the bud now. German Shepherds are also very large and can be aggressive to strangers as adults so being able to control Bentley is very important. I would start with sit, stay, and leave it. Purchase the gentle leader harness that goes on the muzzle. Use that for all walks. Bring treats on the walk and when he tries to jump have him sit. Once he sits he gets a treat. Jumping is unacceptable in a dog his size and is one of the hardest bad habits to break. He should not be allowed to jump on people. The gentle leader allows great control of the head. German Shepherd Dogs are one of the guarding breeds, but Bruno should only go into protection mode when there is an actual threat to you. A benign stranger passing by is most likely not a threat. He needs some training in leash walking and ignoring non-threats. I would enroll him in a good obedience class as soon as possible. I would not recommend your getting another puppy until you have Bruno under control.
