Why is my German Shepherd suddenly afraid of my son after neutering?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 8 months and 23 days old | 74 lbs

All of a sudden our 9 month old German Shepherd is afraid of one of our kids (he's 21) He will let my son pet him but he cowers down and pees every time. My son has always played with him and he's been fine up until about a week ago. Our dog was neutered about a week before he started acting this way. I'm not sure if that has something to do with it or if it's something else because he doesn't do that with anyone else. He hasn't been mistreated, so I'm not sure what is going on with him.

It is amazing what can upset our dogs at times and a stay in the vets office can unsettle some dogs also. I recommend getting your son to feed and walk him on leash as much as possible, ignoring the behavior and not letting him when cowering as this may reinforce the anxiety. A calming supplement such as zylkene and comfort zone diffuser can help also
