French bulldog yelping in pain, acting weird, but no obvious injury?

I'm sorry bosco is so uncomfortable!! Frenchies are very prone to neck and back pain and this may be what is going on. Bringing him to the vet is absolutely the right thing to do. They will be able to see if he is indeed painful and get him the medication he needs to be more comfortable.

This sounds very concerning , could be from the chili, but could also have other causes such as a severe abdominal problem. There is also a possibility that Lyyli may have a problem with her spinal cord, such as intervertebral disc disease. You need to take her to your veterinarian for an exam, preferably today as this does sound like a serious condition. She is obviously in pain.

The hips look ok (hip dysplasia is possible on the right hip joint, but the positioning isn't perfect, which is required for that diagnosis). She does have significant issues with the vertebrae in her thoracic spine. I cannot tell exactly what is going on from these x-rays (it is much easier to evaluate them in-person), but they are likely causing significant discomfort. Lulu may need pain medications for life. A second opinion from a veterinary orthopedic surgeon would be a good idea to see if there is a surgical option to provide pain relief.

If an emergency vet is an option, I would take Nelson in. Brachycephalic dogs (the short-nosed breeds) are prone to developing intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) which could cause these types of symptoms. The vet will do a thorough physical and neurologic exam, and may recommend x-rays to determine what is going on and to select the best treatment plan.

Shaking can be a sign of pain or it could be a neurological condition causing muscle spasms. At either rate this sounds serious for Frank and he needs and exam and perhaps even some blood tests to determine what is happening internally. I would definitely recommend taking him in to your vet asap to hopefully find out what exactly is going on so that he is treated properly for it. Unfortunately there is no way to know how best to treat him without more information on his condition.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry that Beau isn't feeling well. Crying intermittently with no external injuries can be caused by a number of factors. If he is reluctant to walk or limping, then either a soft tissue injury in a joint/fracture/ or torn ligament is possible, however this you would expect to see some limping. Puppies can also get 'growing pains' and conditions of their joints, which affect all of their joints equally, so they are just reluctant to move. This can be incredibly painful and requires strong pain medication. The other common cause of crying out can be gastric pain. This can be caused by Beau getting into something he shouldn't have (bones, garbage, raw food, socks, underwear, etc) and his abdomen being very sorry. Usually with this you will see a reluctance to eat, possibly vomiting/diarrhea, and sometimes pain when you push on his abdomen. If this is the case I strongly suggest to stop the Deramaxx (hard on the gut, especially so young), and to have him re-checked by your vet and x-rays performed. An ultrasound may also be needed to make sure he doesn't have a peritonitis (infection in his abdominal cavity). He could also have a gastritis from worms, so making sure he is up to date on his worming is needed. A fever can also cause animals to feel unwell, so a full physical exam including his temperature is important. I would strongly suggest a re-visit with your vet, and they will likely need to do more tests, like an x-ray as mentioned, or if no answer is found there, or if Beau has a fever some bloodwork may be needed. The typical signs of pain and discomfort are lack of appetite, low energy level, excercise intolerance and lethargy. As you said, bulldogs usually do not yelp in pain therefore pain assessment may be difficult. If in doubt, sometimes we do a pain killers trial for a few days to see of the pain killers will make any difference for the dog.
