Why is my French Bulldog's flaky skin still bad after mite treatment?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she tests negative for mange, I would be suspicious that this may be due to skin allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Thank you for posting your question. I see Otis is a 1yr old French Bulldog and the pictures seem to show several red bumps on his abdomen. Where I practice we do see quite a few French bulldogs with environmental allergies. However, that being said there are multiple causes for the bumps that you are seeing. One possible explanation could be a simple environmental allergy. I see that your veterinarian had started Otis on topical shampoo therapy along with oral antibiotics. This is a good approach, and sometimes this can take some time to get results for the problem to resolve. It does appear based on your pictures that Otis may have a skin infection. The topical shampoo and antibiotics will typically treat this. However, sometimes you have to switch to a different antibiotic and shampoo if it has not resolved with the instructed course of treatment. Also, being 1yr old, skin mites such as demodex and Sarcoptic mange (as you have already mentioned) may also be the culprit. If a skin scraping has not been performed, then I would have your veterinarian do this as the current medications will not treat mites. I would also recommend fish oil (such as welactin), dermoscent essential 6 spot on and duoxo chlorhexidine and PS combination shampoo all of which can be found on Amazon.

That spot on Louie could be several things including an injury, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesion with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just the spot). Protect the area from licking or scratching. If it doesn't start looking better within about a week or if it gets worse, have him examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications. I am so sorry that you are having this problem with Rocco. I certainly understand how frustrating it is to watch him be so itchy. There are a number of reasons for skin problems in dogs. You may still be dealing with a flea allergy even if you regularly treat for fleas. Once a flea bites a flea allergy dog, that dog can stay itchy for a week. You will need to discuss resolving any secondary infections which will make him more itchy. This can involve topical treatments (like shampoos, wipes or sprays) or may involve oral medications. You can then discuss medication for the itching (which may be prescription or over the counter medication). There are a number of good treatment options for itching and allergies, but sometimes it takes a little while to find the right combination for your dog. Good luck! From the pictures you sent, it looks as if Onix could be dealing with skin mites (especially due to his age and the location of these areas of patchy hair loss). I would get him seen by your veterinarian to be diagnosed for skin mites and to receive the most appropriate treatment. Bravecto and Nexgard are 2 great flea / tick products that also treat Demodex skin mites off label. You will need a prescription and a diagnosis in order to use either one of these though. Onix may also have severe allergies / skin infection. I would still encourage you to be seen by your veterinarian to discuss treatment options for the allergies. For now, you can begin some safe supplements though. I would start Canine Welactin omega 3 fish oil, Essential 6 spot on by dermoscent and Benadryl 50mg by mouth every 12 hours (dose for Benadryl is 1mg per 1 lb of body weight, so if he is indeed 55lb, use the above 50mg dose). You could add in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement to help with this. It helps to moisturizer the skin from the inside out essentially. Also you can bathe him in an oatmeal based shampoo and a crime rinse afterwards. Aioli may be suffering from mane, a fungal infection or a bacterial infection. You will need to take your dog to a veterinarian who will likely need to do a skin scrape , swab of the lesions and possibly a culture of a brush sample. Each of these infections are treated with a different kind of medication. Permethrin will not touch them. As a matter of fact she may have had an allergic reaction to the Permethrin or another agent.
