Can fleas live in carpet without biting my dog, even with treatment?

Fleas live in the environment, not on the dog. They jump on the dog to feed, and then jump off. If you haven't disinfected your home, that will be a continual source of fleas. You aren't failing! Typically, a topical treatment works by killing the flea when it bites the dog and sucks it's blood. Because it was live on your dog, it hadn't had a chance yet to bite him and diet. Even if there are more, they will die as soon as they bite your dog thanks to your stringent flea treatments. It's not something I would worry about since he's treated and you found no more on him, but if you wanted to be safe, you can give him Capstar. Capstar will only kill those fleas that are on the dog and sucking blood once. Getting rid of fleas is relatively easy but entails work for a few months: Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your pet when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment:  1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian and apply monthly )Bravecto/Nexgard/Seresto will last longer) 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust., Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. Hot-wash all the pet's bedding, If you do this diligently for a few months you will get rid of the fleas. Yes, that is exactly what is happening. There is no product in the world that will prevent a flea from hopping on a pet, but the flea does die shortly after contact with the pet. Adult fleas live on the host (dog, cat, etc.). They come from the environment and seek out a host to feed and breed. Only about 5% of the flea population are adult fleas. The remainder are eggs, pupae or larvae. These earlier stages typically settle into carpeting or deep in furniture and bedding.
