What's the best flea treatment for my itching Australian Shepherd?

Hi there. I normally recommend either Nexgard or Bravecto for fleas - these are both very effective medications, and can be obtained from your veterinarian or ordered online with a prescription from your vet.

If you’re noticing increased itching in that area and you found a flea, you may try switching the flea prevention to see if that helps. Fleas can become immune to products. The top products on the market are oral products such as Nexgard and Simparica. Most pets can use these products but you should talk with your veterinarian before switching. They are administered once a month and at this point appear to work very well. If the itching goes away, then you know it was related to flea bites. Best of luck.

I would recommend bringing Aries to the veterinarian to get medication to help with the itch. For the fleas I would either get Bravecto, SImparica or Nexguard. You can even use a Seresto collar. These flea preventions work great. You need to treat every animal in your home for at least 3 months. You can also get Capstar. Capstar only lasts for 24 hours so you have to do this in addition to flea prevention. This pill kills adult fleas only. For baths (if you wanted to give them) you can use dawn. I would leave dawn on for 10-15 minutes prior to rinsing it off. If by cleaning and vacuuming multiple times a week and all of this does not help you may need an exterminator. You can consider switching to another flea preventative product such as Bravecto or Frontline. In the meantime, your veterinarian can consider a medication such as prednisone or Apoquel to help with the itch for now. Good luck!

The main control point for flea allergy is to prevent any and all flea bites as well as treating any areas of damaged and potentially infected skin created from severe scratching. A product with rapid onset of action or flea repellant is recommended - bravecto tablets, frontline and advantix are all useful, in some cases combinations may also be required. Treatment of the house and bedding areas initially with a household insecticidal spray is also required as only 5-10% of the flea burden is actually present as adult fleas on yur pet at any one time and it is important to treat all aspects of the problem. Regimental use of flea protection products and strict complciance with any application recommendations such as timng in relation to shampooing/swimming etc is required also going forward

Ouch, poor Rose! Some dogs are allergic to fleas and can become intensely itchy, which can then lead to the development of a bacterial skin infection, which only amplifies the itch cycle. You did the right thing by starting Rose on flea prevention (K9 Advantix II is my favorite OTC topical), but a flea collar is unnecessary. Be sure to continue using topical flea prevention monthly to prevent flea eggs from hatching to larvae and reproducing. With the redness on Rose's skin, it is highly suspicious that she has developed a skin infection, which requires antibiotics for resolution. There aren't any over the counter medications available to to help with her itching or skin infection, so Rose will need to go to the vet. The vet will be able to prescribe the best medication (likely antibiotics and anti-itch medications) for Rose to remedy this issue. I hope that she feels better soon!

If he has a flea allergy than it will probably take a little bit of time for the itching to resolve. You could ask your vet for an anti-histamine or a corticosteroid to help relieve the itching. Make sure to use a monthly flea prevention, like NexGard, Frontline, Advantage, etc every month to prevent him from getting fleas again.
