My spayed dog has fleas. Can I use flea spray near her incision?

You will need to wait a couple hours so that the fabric does not absorb the topical treatment. This could lead to under dosing her. The incision looks good. There is no redness, swelling or discharge and it looks closed. The bit of "crust" around the edges can be gently removed with a pet wipe or a plain, unscented baby wipe.

Hi there. Thank you for using PetCoach. So sorry you had this experience at your vet. The number one thing you need to do is make sure to limit her activity. No running around free in the yard. No playing with other dogs or running up/down stairs. No jumping up on beds or couches. She should only be leash walked only and kept as calm and quiet as possible for about 7-10 days. Also, make sure she cannot lick the incision - this is the number one problem we see post-operatively - dogs lick the incision and get it open. So be sure to use an E-collar (cone) for at least 10 days. If they did not give you one, you can buy one at any large pet store or online. You can apply this fly repellant ointment AROUND the incision but not on it. It is recommended that you not put anything on the incision directly. Yes you can most certainly use a Capstar this close to surgery because this medication usually works within 1 hr, lasts only 24 hrs and has no affect on the cardiovascular or respiratory system, so its safe to use same day of surgery if needed. In fact, in practice we often give this medication to surgery pets right before their surgery if they have fleas to prevent the spread of fleas to other hospitalized pets. So no worries. It wouldn't hurt to let them know you gave the medication. However you should consider putting Darcy on a flea preventative as well to prevent re-infestation, because chances are that the fleas have laid eggs in the environment as well, and since Capstar is not a preventative, it will be out of her system after 24 hrs has passed.

We normally recommend waiting 2 weeks after surgery before bathing/getting the incision wet. If you are just cleaning the area next to the incision with a cloth this would be ok, but I wouldn't clean the actual incision itself for two more days to play it safe.

Sometimes an oatmeal based shampoo helps with itching (do not bathe your puppy until at least 10-25 days after her surgery). For flea control there are both OTC and prescription options as well as topical and oral. Depending on his frequently they are bathed, tolerance of topical application and other factors your veterinarian could recommend which product(s) work best for your situation. If you need something now most pet supply stores have products like Frontline or Advantage topical a which work well. It is important their environment is treated as well to prevent fleas. Also if either dog has a skin infection from scratching (which happens often in these cases) your veterinarian will often prescribe antibiotics for their skin.

Flea medication should be fine to give as long as you're not placing a topical directly on or near any wounded areas as the medication will stay on the skin and can seep into the wound causing irritation, and as long as Goofy is not vomiting and able to keep down meds if you're giving a pill.
