What's the best flea & regular shampoo for my double-coated German Shepherd?

I use different shampoos depending on the coat. If he’s a GSD with oily skin I use an anti seborrhea shampoo. If his skin is dry or itchy I use a mild hypoallergenic shampoo. If he’s had skin infections I recommend a medicated shampoo. I often have several shampoos around and adjust them depending on his coat condition at the time of bathing. I do not recommend any flea or tick shampoos, these are usually not safe products and not as long lasting as more modern preventive treatment for fleas and ticks. here is the list of the best flea products on the market. Hello. Willow may have a bit of dermatitis going on. I would recommend bathing her in a Benzoyl Peroxide based shampoo which you can find at most pet retailers & online. Follow the directions by making sure you leave the lather on for 10 minutes before rinsing. Repeat twice a week until the skin heals ( which may take several weeks of bathing ). If the skin does not seem to be healing, she may have allergies or require antibiotics, but a medicated shampoo often will clear up these minor issues. I would not recommend shaving her as it will not resolve the underlying skin problem and may not regrow. I would start with a good quality oral parasite prevention such as bravecto, an omega fatty acid supplement and a medicated shampoo such as malaseb to address yeast overgrowth and surface infections. If not improving over 10-14days a full vet check will be required

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a focal infection. You can try to use chlorhexidine containing shampoo to bathe her twice weekly for 2 weeks. You may find these online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!

The top quality flea preventatives out there are Nexgard, Bravecto, Simparica, or Credelio. You can also try Advantix over the counter, but his has variable results. The itching is likely because he has a flea allergy. If this still doesn't resolve, then a vet visit is needed for allergy medication. I do hope that Ruger's itching and flea problem resolve soon! The dry crusts will likely be easiest to remove with a fine toothed comb like a flea comb. Its probably best to do this prior to a bath and then bathe them in a puppy shampoo. Their skin can be sensitive at this age and they will also lose body heat quickly so you will need to dry them quickly as well as make sure they are warm. If the lesions continue, take them in for an exam to look for parasites or infections that may be causing this. Congrats on the litter!
