My female pit bull has a rash on her genitals and keeps licking it.

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 75 lbs

My two yr old female pit bull has a rash only on her genitals. She incessantly licks at it making it worse. We have not taken her to her vet yet. The weather has been nice lately so she has been outside a lot during the day. She has been sleeping a bit more. Her appetite is good.

Hello. I am sorry that Angle isn't feeling well. Pit Bulls often get skin infections, and licking is going to make it worse and re-infect it. I would suggest getting her a cone so she can't lick at it, and clean the area with warm water. If you are seeing any yellow or cream discharge, or if there are small pustules, then she will need antibiotics and needs to see a vet. Either way a visit to the vet is a good idea to see if she needs antibiotics or something for inflammation or pain. Sleeping more is a sign of pain. You can try with the cone first, and just keeping her clean and dry, and see if the rash heals up on it's own, if it isn't healing or getting worse then have it seen right away. Poor Angie! She may have a vaginal infection causing her to lick this area excessively, which in turn can cause red, raw skin. This could also be an allergy related problem, or a skin infection of some kind. Ideally, I would recommend having her checked by a vet when you are able to, as she will likely need prescription medication such as an antibiotic and/or a steroid like prednisone to treat this problem effectively.

In the meantime, you can gently clean the area as needed with warm water and antibacterial soap - just make sure to dry it thoroughly afterwards, as any remaining moisture may contribute to the itching and irritation. You may also want to get an e-collar (plastic cone) for her to wear until you are able to see the vet, to prevent her from continuing to lick the area and make things worse.

Why is my Pitbull licking a rash and rubbing her butt on the floor?

Wow, this rash looks quite painful to Lexi! It could be due to a contact allergy or a skin infection caused by yeast or bacteria. Coconut oil likely won't fix this rash, as she will simply lick off the oil. I would not apply anymore as too much oil can lead to pancreatitis. Lexi will need to see a vet for this rash first thing tomorrow morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing the rash so she can be treated. Tonight, you can try giving her an oatmeal or Epsom salt bath which may be soothing to her. As for rubbing her butt on the floor, that can be due to anal sac impaction or intestinal worms. The vet can also diagnose what is causing that behavior and can either express her anal sacs for you or give her a deworming treatment.

Pitbull's skin rash is worsening. What's causing it and how to treat?

This is a skin infection. Medicated baths sometimes help but fair skinned dogs are more prone to allergies and skin infections. To clear this up she probably needs oral antibiotics for several weeks. This is not contagious. Some dogs develop this when laying in a moist area, or on something irritating. Please take her for a veterinary exam to confirm the problem and get medication to treat this. My pitbull puppy has a hot, spreading belly rash. Should I see a vet?

Hello, and thank you for your question. Poor Skye. My guess is this is a severe allergic reaction as well as secondary bacterial infection of the skin. If ointments and benadryl are not helping, she will require stronger, oral medications, to control the inflammation and treat the infection. This will require a visit to the veterinarian. I would recommend this visit within the next 12-24 hours, given how uncomfortable this looks for Skye. In the meantime, you could try giving Skye a bath with a gentle aloe and oatmeal type of shampoo, just to give her some temporary relief, and hope to wash off any surface allergens that may be irritating her skin. Rinse off the shampoo thoroughly with lukewarm water afterwards, and pat dry (don't rub). I hope this helps, and your little girl is feeling better soon.

What to do if my dog has a red, blotchy rash near her privates?

This looks like local irritation or infection. You would need to have Belle physically examined by your veterinarian, though, for confirmation. In the meantime, keep the area clean and dry. You can use pet wipes or plain, unscented baby wipes to gently clean the area. Dry thoroughly afterwards. A small amount of plain cornstarch will work to keep the folds in her skin dry. An e-collar (cone) should be used to prevent further licking. This, along with cleaning, may be enough to allow healing, but if not then Belle will need to be seen by your vet. Monitor for lethargy, excessive urination, difficulty urinating or spread of the rash.

My pitbull has a spreading rash but isn't itching. What's the cause?

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics).
