How to feed two dogs when one is dominant and hogs all the food?

This is not a terribly uncommon problem and should be somewhat easily resolvable. I would consider feeding the dogs in an area that you can keep them separate but still in visible contact with one another. If you are able to keep the two apart with a baby gate that could probably work fine. Another option would be to feed one of them in a crate, which is actually what I do with one of my own dogs. Another option might be to feed your female with a bowl that requires her to eat more slowly. This might give your other pup some additional time to eat in peace. This has the potential to backfire however, if Xena gets annoyed by the difficult bowl and just decides that her son's is easier to eat from. Hope this helps and at least gives you some ideas about how to resolve the issue. If none of this seems possible, you may need to consider some additional training for Xena including some commands to force her to come to you when she is called, and to divert her attention away from the other food bowl.

I would keep Soska locked in another room while you feed your puppy the additional two meals. I would recommend feeding her twice a day, however, Twenty-four hours is a long time to go between meals, and if you divide her daily allotment of food into two equal meals fed once in the morning and once at night, she would be less likely to go after the puppy's food. I think you need to give them more time. Just keep separating them to eat - put them in completely separate rooms with the doors closed. Put the food down and leave the room. Leave the food down for 10 minutes and then go back in the rooms and pick up the food. Do this 3-4 times per day until you can get them eating twice a day. DO NOT say anything to the dogs when you put them in their rooms and give them the food. Anything you say can be construed by the dog as reinforcement for negative behavior. Ignoring the behavior is best. Make sure you give food that they really like - try canned food. NO people food.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think the best way is to separate them. I would recommend you continue to keep them separate when it is time to eat. If you continue to feed Molly only her diet, eventually she will understand that that is all she will get and most likely will start eating it. You can add canned chicken or chicken broth to it for example to entice her appetite which may get her going faster. Good luck!

Feed just one diet. Switching diets frequently will reinforce the finicky behavior and may lead to gastrointestinal upset. Dogs thrive on routine, so feed Magnus at regular mealtimes not when asked. Prepare the dog food and leave it down for 20-30 minutes then pick it up whether it has been eaten or not. Repeat this at the next mealtime. Do not feed or give treats between meals. If you are training, use a reward that takes no more than a second or two to eat. Be firm. Magnus will not starve. She will eat the food that is offered when she gets hungry. Sweets should not be given regularly and tea contains caffeine which can be toxic to dogs. Regarding her calming down, consider formal obedience training to teach manners. Your vet may be able to recommend or refer you to a certified trainer. Regular exercise and a variety of toys and tasks will keep her "busy" and work off excess energy.
