Why is my English Bulldog still peeing at night after vet visits?

He is so cute! If you are finding that he is urinating while he is sleeping then this definitely could be incontinence. I would talk to your vet about trying Proin (aka phenylpropanolamine) to see if this helps. This helps to tighten the urethral sphincter to prevent incontinence. It is used most commonly on female dogs but I have had some success using it in males. If you are seeing puddles throughout the house, he could have a urinary tract infection. I would have your vet do a urinalysis on him to see if there is any bacteria present. Your vet will be able to prescribe him the proper antibiotics to help him feel better. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry you're having such a challenge diagnosing what is going on with Dude. An increase in water intake and urination is not commonly associated with allergies of any kind. As you know, the first step in evaluating an increase in water intake and urination is to check a urine sample and blood work. Based on those results, did your vet recommend any additional testing? I would presume that Dude's urine concentration was low That can hide a number of things that can be going on. So, you could consider getting a sterile urine sample to submit to the lab for urine culture and sensitivity to see if a urinary tract infection is hiding in a dilute urine sample. You can have an abdominal ultrasound performed to further evaluate the internal organs in the abdomen to see if that gives you additional information. Sometimes, I will recommend this testing be done with an internal medicine specialist ( http://find.vetspecialists.com/ ). That's a tough case. If the ultrasound did not include evaluation of the kidneys and ureters (tubes leading from kidney to bladder), it may be worthwhile to have this evaluated using ultrasound or CT. Some patients have ureters that are implanted abnormally in the bladder wall leading to urinary accidents. The second question would be whether or not he has crystals in the urine which may lead to irritation and accidents. The third question is the thickening in the bladder wall...what is it? Can it be aspirated? You need to discuss these questions with your veterinarian or possibly a veterinary internal medicine specialist.

It sounds like Blacky had a urinary tract infection, which sometimes can become recurrent or resistant and difficult to treat. His urine may need to be cultured again to see if the infection has resolved. Sometimes bladder stones or polyps, or diseases like Cushing's or kidney disease could also cause urine leakage. Finally, he may have urinary incontinence due to a neurologic issue and require medication to help stop the leakage. I would recommend talking to your veterinarian to see if there are any additional tests they would recommend.

Urinary incontinence is a common problem in older spayed female dogs. Your veterinarian can prescribe medication to control this. I’m glad you’ve checked her urine and since it was negative then starting her on medication for incontinence is the next step. Yes, all medications can have side effects and can be ineffective or even dangerous if given in the wrong situations. Your vet will likely want to run a urine test to rule out complications such as diabetes, infection, inflammation or even bladder tumours which could be triggering the reduced bladder control and if all is clear they can then prescribe medication to help reduce the leaking if it is simple incontinence
