Why is my English Bulldog losing fur on both sides after neutering?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! English Bull dogs are prone to allergies (food and environment), skin infections, demodex, and immune conditions. I would have the bumps checked to see if they are from a skin infection from yeast and/or bacteria. I would put Henry on Bravecto or Nexgard to cover for demodex. Since he is older I would have full blood work done, including a thyroid profile. If the skin doesn't improve on therapy in 3 weeks have some of the lesions biopsied to make sure it isn't skin cancer. Especially if skin problems are abnormal for him. If the lesions are more bumps than flat hairless areas and aren't consistent with a skin infection I would jump to the biopsy sooner. I hope this helps and I wish Henry a speedy recovery!

Circular areas of hair loss could potentially be ringworm lesions which are caused by a fungal infection of the skin/hair. Your veterinarian can perform an Wood’s Lamp test (shining a black light on the lesion -some ringworm lesions will glow green under a black light) and a fungal culture to confirm and send home a topical antifungal lotion/cream if positive. Some dogs develop circular areas of hair loss after a vaccine, although that flank location is not typical for a vaccine. Other causes could potentially be mange (for which newer oral flea and tick preventatives such as NexGard, Simparica and Bravecto can be used to treat), a simple abrasion, hotspot (local area of irritation for which a topical prescription steroid/antibiotic ointment plus and e-collar can be effective). As ringworm is zoonotic (transmissible to people), I recommend scheduling an appointment with your local veterinarian as soon as possible! Good luck!

That is unusual. It's possible he is experiencing some changes in his hormones. Environmental allergies and melatonin responsive dermatosis are also possible. I recommend to start with a physical exam with his veterinarian. This will help to get the process started to determine the cause. The hair loss on Bobby's flanks is certainly quite prominent. This could be caused by endocrine/metabolic disorders like hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease, underlying allergies to food, the environment or fleas, mange, ringworm, among other conditions. Regardless, it would be best for Bobby to go to the vet for evaluation. The vet will be able to start with a physical exam, and based upon those findings and his clinical history at home (i.e. itching, lethargy, weight fluctuations, changes in drinking or urination, diet changes, lifestyle, etc.), will be able to determine the next diagnostic steps. Bobby may need to have blood testing, skin scrapes, fungal cultures, and/or skin cytology to get to the bottom of this issue. I hope that all goes well!

Bulldogs are notorious for having skin issues and allergies, along with their other problems (breathing issues, eye issues, etc.) I suggest talking with your vet to see if there is a current infection (yeast or bacteria) on her skin or in her ears. If there is, this needs to be treated. After this secondary infection is treated you need to address the underlying cause, which is most often allergies. Allergies can be to food, laundry soap, environment, etc. I would start by switching her to a hypoallergenic diet (prescription from the vet), and discuss medications such as Apoquel, Atopica, or steroids, to control her allergies (if they feel this is the cause after examining her). The hair patch loss could be due to lack of melatonin, and you can try supplementing, but could also be due to hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, or allergies. Ask your vet about testing for these. An E-collar can be used to prevent licking/chewing at the feet to give them time to heal. This is often required. Best of luck with Olive! I hope she feels better soon.

That spot on Harvey could be several things including allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection or ringworm (which humans can get). Hopefully this is a good sign that his body is fighting the cause since it appears to be healing. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You can wash the lesion once a day (not his whole body, just the lesions). You can apply a dab of organic coconut oil once a day and rub in well (do not allow him to lick the area afterwards). Also protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. If the lesion do not start improving within a week or if it is getting worse, have him examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
