Why does my dog yip when I touch him, but shows no other pain signs?

Poor Baby! It definitely sounds like she's painful somewhere. In my experience, the most common cause of yelping or yipping when touched or petted is back pain, often due to a herniated disc - this is a fairly common problem in dogs. She could also be painful due to some other injury to her legs or back. I would recommend having her examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - he/she can do a thorough exam to help localize the source of the pain, and may also do x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem.

I would be worried that Lui has an injury (Not necessarily from anyone petting or harming him) or something such as ear or tooth pain that is radiating out and causing the yelping when he is pet. It is a good idea to bring him to a vet ASAP so they can check in his ears, mouth, and neck to rule out any issues such as an infected tooth or ear that could be causing the problem. In the meantime, being careful with handling him may help reduce pain until he can be seen. If health issues are ruled out, it's also possible that Lui is a bit fearful of people, and so is yelping if he doesn't feel comfortable with being handled. Speaking with a local trainer about how to help with fear and socialization may be a good idea.

If only Milo could talk! This type of behavior could be related to something like anxiety or to pain/discomfort. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian who will check for evidence of pain on the physical exam. Many times this type of sudden pain is related to intervertebral disc disease, discospondylitis, upper abdominal pain or a pinched nerve. Poor Joey. The two possibilities here are that it hurts or that he scares him when you pick him up. I'd lean towards pain from your description, but keep fear in mind since your vet didn't find any pain. One area pain can "hide" during a physical exam is in the spine or neck - vet's don't always check this area carefully. I would recommend a recheck visit, since it's still going on with no changes to see if anything is different on physical exam this time, and ask if doing a trial of pain meds for around 5 days would be appropriate. If pain meds don't help, experiment with never picking him up to see if that makes him happier. Good luck!

I recommend that if this persists, you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for this possibility and treat him accordingly. I recommend that you take your pet to your local veterinarian for an examination and blood work. There are numerous reasons an animal may have pain in the lower part of her body, including kidney infection/stones, degenerative disc disease, spains/strains, osteoarthritis, or trauma, etc. Often, lack of eating is a sign of pain or distress. Once your pet's source of pain/discomfort is diagnosed and treated, you pet will be more likely to eat again.

If he comes inside licking the paw, I worry about an insect bite or sting or something stuck in his paw such as a piece of plant material like you mentioned. If he is just holding the leg up, the pain could be from higher up in the limb. He could have been excited at the veterinary appointment which allows the adrenaline to over ride the pain he is likely experiencing at home. Is it always the same leg? Some puppies will experience lameness that shifts legs as they grow. If no pain was found in his leg, he could be experiencing neck pain. This can radiate down the leg causes referred pain. If it continues, he should be re-evaluated and may need x-rays to determine the cause of his pain. I hope this information helps!
