My chihuahua yelps, struggles to walk, is sleepy, and won't eat. Why?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Peanut. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. Small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain which can be excruciatingly painful. He will be carefully examined to determine if this is the case or if he has another problem. Based on these results and any diagnostic testing, treatment recommendations can be made. Poor Peanut. She could be having stomach cramps which are causing her to run around and yelp. You could try to feed her some plain boneless, skinless chicken and white rice to see if this settles her tummy. If she isn't improving or constantly yelping, I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to figure out the main problem(s) and get her started on the proper meds!

It sounds as Peanut is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti nausea injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Aw poor Byron! It sounds like he is pretty sick. Some of what your describing may be related to back or neck pain or abdominal pain caused by gastrointestinal disease. Without an examination it's difficult to say what is causing the problem. I recommend taking Byron to see a veterinarian right away so he can be examined and the cause of his illness can be determined. He may need pain medication and because there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs you will need a prescription pain medication from a veterinarian. There are a wide variety of possible causes for anorexia and lethargy in a young dog, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, bacterial or viral infection (especially parvo virus in improperly vaccinated dogs), intestinal blockage, colitis, among others. I would recommend trying to schedule an appointment at a vet in a different area, as this really shouldn't wait for another week.

It's possible that he has some back or neck pain. This is one of the more common causes of sudden yelps of pain that don't seem related to anything specific. It does sound like Oreo is likely having some pain, so I would recommend that you take him in to see your veterinarian today if at all possible. They will do a physical exam and determine whether he's painful and try to localize the cause better. They can send him with some medications to make him more comfortable and may recommend other treatments as well (acupuncture, therapeutic laser, etc). Until you can get him in to see your vet, avoid giving him any over the counter human pain medication, as there is not a safe option to use and giving something like aspirin at home will limit the choices your vet has to treat his pain when you take him in. Also, until you can get him in for an exam, keep him exercise restricted; don't take him on walks, don't encourage "tug or war," chasing a ball, or other play. I hope that helps you!
