My dog yelped playing tug and stumbled. Should I be worried?

This type of injury where you have vocalization, limping, and swelling definitely needs to be looked at by your veterinarian. A thorough physical exam of the area and potentially radiographs of the bones are needed here to provide the care that Stormy needs after an injury to this degree. I would highly recommend taking him in to be seen as soon as you can. You are not going to be able to care for an injury like this at home. For tonight, its best to just keep Stormy quiet in an isolated room without any other pets to disturb him and apply a cold compress to the swollen area, if tolerated, for about 3-5 mins. Using a bag of peas will suffice. I do hope that you are able to get Stormy some medical attention soon. Best of luck and take care.

Unfortunately, if he is not really using it, it does hurt. I would be concerned about a cruciate ligament rupture in a big dog that was playing for a few hours yesterday. I would call your veterinarian in the morning and have them evaluate his leg. They can give him pain medication and depending on the physical examination they may recommend x-rays. Yes, it could be that Roxie is just sore from playing too rough yesterday. If the whimpering and discomfort continue for more than two days and I would recommend taking her into the vet. The vet may recommend x-rays and they can give you some medication to help her feel better while she recovers. Your vet will also be able to check to make sure she did not do anything too serious like tear a ligament in her knee. I hope this helps. Poor Cooper! From your description, my main concern is that Cooper may be experiencing some mild neck and/or back pain that flares up intermittently. At this point, I do recommend taking Cooper back to his vet for a repeat exam. Some dogs can be extremely stoic, even while experiencing pain, as a defense mechanism. Your vet will be able to thoroughly evaluate Cooper's back and neck to determine if he is showing any sign of discomfort and prescribe pain medication if necessary. Until you can take him to the vet, confine Cooper to a large crate or small room to prevent him from running, jumping or playing, as this can exacerbate any back injury or pain. Hello. I would not be too concerned about this because I have observed this in my own pets at times. Sometimes its when they are wrestling with each other or playing tug of war with me. I have always just assumed either a little saliva has inadvertently made its way into the trachea, or the growling dries & irritates the throat. It is possible that he could have sustained a minor soft tissue injury, but as long as he is otherwise acting normally - eating/drinking/urinating/defecating - and not showing any signs of lameness/limping, he should be OK!
