My dog has yellow slimy poop. What causes it and what should I do?

  Oh no, poor Ginger! She could be suffering from colitis, which is inflammation of the colon and large intestine. This would cause bloody diarrhea. She could also have a foreign body, may have eaten something toxic, could have done trauma to her GI tract, or could have GI ulcers among other causes. If she is otherwise normal as well as eating and drinking, you can try a home remedy. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, there is still blood in her feces on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

  Poor Apollo! It could be he is suffering from a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have intestinal worms, or a foreign body causing his diarrhea. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6-8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.   Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Diarrhea can have many causes, from infectious ( viral,bacterial), to dietary indiscretions ( exposure to garbage/dead animals) to foreign body ingestion. The first thing I recommend if a veterinary visit is not possibly, is to take a stool sample in to look for intestinal parasites. If no parasites are present, & if Ziggy is otherwise feeling well, bright & alert, adequate water intake & no vomiting, then you can try resting his gut for 24 hours. That means no food, period. Ice cubes can be offered to quench thirst, but nothing else. Then start Ziggy on boiled hamburger or plain skinless chicken & plain boiled white rice. The rice should make up 75% of the diet. Feed Ziggy small meals more frequent than usual for the nest 24-48 hours. Hopefully, this will set things right again. Take care.

  No! I do not think that Daisy is near the end! Diarrhea can happen for many reasons! Possible causes are: less likely intestinal parasites due to her age, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, toxin ingestion, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to new food/table food/treat, pancreatitis. Sometimes we never know why dogs develop diarrhea.
  
  If the diarrhea is severe fast her for 12-24 hours to rest the intestinal tract. Then resume feeding with a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until normal stools. You can also add in a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. If you don't start to see improvement in a few days make an appointment with your Vet for medications.
