Can an X-ray determine if my dog needs a C-section or natural birth?

Does x-ray can confirm also if she will deliver normal or ceasarian?

An x-ray is helpful for determing the size of the birth canal relative to the size of the puppy's head. If there is a known problem, then a c-section would be recommended.

However, the x-ray is limited and cannot test for all the possible reasons for needing a c-section. If there is any concern, then it would be best to have a plan for a possible c-section when she is whelping.

An xray close to parturition (giving birth) can show the size of the heads of the puppies and they can be compared with the size of the pelvic opening. Your veterinarian should be able to judge whether there may be trouble to be expected. This is never 100% as the pelvic opening can widen (there is a hormone called relaxin that enables the ligaments to stretch) but it is not possible to predict how much. You may want to discuss this with your veterinarian.

Hi Viv! Penny is a beautiful girl, and this is a great question! Yes, I absolutely recommend having her seen by a vet to get an x-ray to confirm the number of puppies she is having. That way, you will know how many to expect, and when to call the vet if they aren't making an appearance. Given that she has had previous problems giving birth, I would start saving as well for the possibly of a c-section. I will put a link below to a website that details problems to look out for when whelping so you know when to call the vet and get her in right away in case she does need a c section. The vet can spay her as well at the time of the c section should she need one. Good on you for reaching out for help :)

How to avoid repeat C-section for my small dog's large puppies?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Achoos. Unfortunately, if the puppies are too large for her to safely deliver, then a C-section will be necessary again. She can have x-rays prior to delivery to determine if the puppies can fit through pelvis. There not medications that can be given safely during pregnancy to change the size of the puppies. Hello, it is difficult to predict wether or not she would need a c-section. Clues that would help determine if she may need a c-section include previous episodes of needing a c-section, being overweight, and having an abnormal external genitalia conformation. You could consult with a veterinary theriogenologist for a pre-breeding exam to determine if there are any abnormalities within her external genitalia or her overall health which would predispose her to complications with labor. Is it safe for a small female dog to get pregnant by a large dog?

No this isn’t entirely correct. She does however have a greater chance of needing a C-section if the puppies end up being bigger than her birth canal. Which is why it’s best to have her examined by your vet and radiographs taken to look at the size of the fetuses. I would strongly suggest to keep her monitored during pregnancy as c-section may be needed to deliver the puppies. Radiographs at 40 days of pregnancy will be very useful to assess the size of the puppies and make sure they can be naturally delivered. My dog had a C-section. Will her next birth be difficult again?

Once they have an issue giving birth (dystocia) and they have had a C-section they will usually continue to have problems. If I were your vet I would have spayed her at the time of surgery. Sorry to say this but if you play the odds she will most likely need to have another C-section. Every C-section causes scarring/adhesions of the uterine lining making it difficult for the placenta(s) of the future puppies to attach. If you are serious about breeding her only use a male that is smaller than she is to reduce the size of the puppies - that may help with the birthing process but will not help the attachment of the placentas. And, be prepared for another C-section. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
