My dog has worms in his stool. Should I give him deworming medicine?

If the dewormer you are using does not indicate that it treats tapeworms then it probably does not. Tapeworms segments look like pieces of rice so if that is what you are seeing then she probably has tapeworms. If you are seeing long worms that look like spaghetti then she probably has roundworms. Dogs get tapeworms from eating fleas so if she has tapeworms that means she has or had a flea problem. Since I don't know the exact medications that you are using, it is difficult to know if they can be given together. You could re-post with both medications and then we may be better able to answer the question. You could also take a stool sample to your vet and have it tested for parasites so you know the exact parasite that she has.

No, it would be highly unlikely to see worms in every stool. Worms only pass through the stool intermittently, just as they only shed their eggs intermittently. Be sure that the deworming medication that you purchased is appropriate for the type of worms that are present. If Diamond's worms resemble spaghetti, they are likely roundworms, whereas if they resemble grains of rice, they are likely tapeworms. Tapeworms can be a bit trickier to treat and will likely require prescription based dewormers from your vet. As fair warning, if Diamond has a large burden of worms, she may vomit or have diarrhea with worms present, but this is usually short-lived. I hope that all goes well!

You are correct. He has what appears to be tapeworms, which is caused by either fleas (most common cause) or ingesting another pets feces that has worms in it. I would notify the friend, get him on a flea preventative if not on one already, and then take him to your friends approved vet who can then treat for the tapeworms. These are usually easily resovled with 1 dose of specific dewormer for tapeworms. THese worms are transmissible (hand-to mouth) to people, so its best to always use good hygiene practices and keep young kids away from the pet until the worms are resolved. I would agree those look like worms in Meeko's stool. Some puppies need multiple deworming to finally kill all the worms in their intestines. Depending on what type of product you are using, this can be safe to give as often as once a week. Look on the package for directions or post a photo of it and address it with another post. Be aware that humans can get worms from their pets so make sure to be washing your hands well after playing with Meeko, before you eat and don't let him lick you in the mouth, If you have further concerns about worms, contact your human doctor. If you find worms in his feces then your dog is really infested with worms. If the worms look like grains of rice (white or cream colored), then your dog has tape worm and normal wormers will not work. Best get the wormer from your vet. You may also want to bring a fecal sample to your vet so he can determine what kind of wormer your dog needs.

It could be that Roscoe has tapeworms, which requires praziquantel to treat. I'd see if the deworming medication you gave him contains praziquantel; if it does not, that's why he's still pooping out the worms. Drontal is an excellent deworming medication that contains praziquantel, and you can get it from your vet. Give him a dose as soon as you get it, then another in two weeks to kill all the worms. If the medication does contain praziquantel, give him another dose of the deworming treatment two weeks after the first. Because of the life cycle of intestinal worms, two treatments given two weeks apart are needed to kill all the worms. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

From that description, it sounds like he may have tape worms. The heartworm test doesn't test for tapeworms (or any intestinal parasites) and the medication is heartgard wouldn't kill tapeworms. A fecal test doesn't always show the worm eggs either for this particular type of parasite. I'd recommend giving your clinic a call to see what they policies are - you may be able to pick up medications from the description alone, or they many need you to schedule an appointment. Finally, make sure Buddy is on a good flea preventative -- he got the tapeworms from eating a flea. He could definitely have just found it outside, but it's worth mentioning!
