My dog has worms. Are there OTC dewormers if I can't afford a vet?

These tiny white worms may be pieces of tapeworms. Unfortunately, Athena does have to see a vet to have this treated. That's because the medication required to treat tapeworms (praziquantel) is available by prescription only from the vet. Those look like they are probably roundworms. She would have gotten them from coming into contact with infective eggs in the soil most likely. (From where another dog pooped and that poop contained roundworm eggs, then your dog was nosing around near where that was (even if there was no obvious poop on the ground, the eggs will stay in the soil). It is not a result of the food. You can get effective roundworm treatment over the counter. Look for a pyrantel product and follow the label instructions. Feed stores will generally carry it. Typically tapeworms can be treated with anybody worming medication that contains praziquantel . However this could just be a side effect of the poop sitting out and insects laying eggs on the poop. Deworming should not harm your dog.

Tapeworms are the most common at his age and look like small grains of rice. They get these from eating a flea, so you may need to look for flea control
