My dog won't eat, is underweight, and has bloody poop. What can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | German Wirehaired Pointer | Female | spayed | 7 years and 10 months old | 50 lbs

My dog might eat 3-5 meals a week. Even then, she throws up and has bad runny bloody poop. I've spent $600 having her tested for everything and the vet says nothing is wrong, I just need to find the right food. Given that. Is there any Pill, or liquid that I can give her to make her gain weight? Since she won't eat, its not a matter of just feeding her more. She can have as much food as she likes. I need something to make her gain weight.

Unfortunately, there is no pill or medication that can make Lil gain weight.
There could be an underlying malabsorption or maldigestion condition. This may require special blood tests or biopsies to diagnose.
You could try a high performance or high protein diet to get the weight on. Any diet change should take place gradually over 7-10 days to avoid stomach upset.

Based on what you seeing, having a fecal sample brought in to your veterinarian for analysis would be a great plan. He or she will be able to tell you if there are any intestinal parasites present. This is one of the most common reasons for blood in the stool, and weight loss despite a normal appetite. If you can not get to the veterinarian, treatment with a dewormer and/or drug to kill coccidia might be warranted. These can be obtained at most pet stores or tractor supply.

You might try a diet change and see if something else would sit better on her tummy. You may try a low residue diet like Royal Canin Sensitive Stomach. Purina ProPlan makes a sensitive stomach that is good as well. You may also ask your veterinarian about trying a prescription bland diet or even a food trial with a hydrolyzed protein. Give any diet you try 1 month to take full effect and make sure to transition any diet changes over 5-7 days. I hope this helps.

My dog is lethargic, not eating, and has bloody stool. What to do?

Poor Luna! She could have an infection (parvo, etc) or a parasite. Since she has bloody stool and is lethargic, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can test a stool sample to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat the problem. She might also need some fluids to prevent dehydration. Hope she gets better soon!

My puppy is hungry and too thin on low-fat food. What to do?

Using a low fat food to prevent the abdominal pain and blood in the stool is fine but you need to increase the amount and number of feedings to get her to gain weight. I would increase the amount at each feeding by 20% and feed three to four meals daily so she isn't so hungry and gains weight. You shouldn't be able to see her hip bones. My dog eats a lot but is always thin. Why can't he gain weight?

He likely has inflammatory bowel disease or some type of malabsorption problem. Keeping him on lifelong steroids (prednisone) is not recommended. The first thing you have to do is get a diagnosis. I recommend he have an abdominal ultrasound and/or x-rays and some blood testing to start with. A fecal test is also a good idea to rule out any intestinal parasites. If you can't afford testing then speak to your vet about doing a trial of Tylosin powder to control IBD symptoms instead of steroids.
