My dog isn't eating or drinking after deworming. What should I do?

I'm wondering if you mean you gave Buddy a dewormer. You can see some stomach upset from giving a deworming treatment, as it can be due to the dead worms moving through the GI system, but it shouldn't stop him from eating completely. I would be concerned that he could have a medical illness causing him to not eat and have deceased drinking. Because of this, I would have him checked out by a vet right away. Best of luck.

It is quite possible that he is nauseous from the medicine or he had a lot of worms which are now dying and that is causing him a tummy ache. Don;t feed him for 12 to 24 hours and then offer him some bland food such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken. Feed him small portions often. When he has regained his appetite he should be fine. There is a possibility that he will get diarrhea as well for a day or two as the body is going to try to get rid of the worms as quickly as possible.

Some dewormers may cause some gastrointestinal upset. It is good that Frankie will drink water and keep it down. Consider mixing in some unflavored PediaLyte. Try a bland diet again but warm it slightly or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate his appetite. Once he is eating regularly, transition slowly to the regular diet. Hello, sorry to hear about Puku. I would likely not give him a deworming unless you have a positive stool sample. Otherwise, the dewormer medication may cause him to feel sicker. If his appetite does not return to normal in a few days then you should have a visit with your veterinarian. If he returns back to normal then you can continue to monitor him. Deworming typically treats roundworms and tapeworms, of which these typically do not cause many clinical signs and typically involve some weightloss. If Puku does have worms, you may be able to see these on the stool. A fecal test would be the best way to diagnose parasites, so you could simply collect a fresh sample and have your veterinarian submit it for testing. Hope this helps and best of luck.

If he is not eating and drinking, there is a reason. Furthermore, it is easy for him to become dehydrated. He could be experiencing pain somewhere such as his neck, back or joints. He could have inflammation in his gastrointestinal tract or be experiencing a systemic disease that is making refuse his food. His veterinarian will gain information based on his physical exam as to what his problem may be. From there either medications will be prescribed or he will require further testing. In the meantime, try to encourage him to take in some water. Some dogs will even take ice cubes. I hope this information helps!

I am not sure the type of dewormer or the vaccines that you used but vomiting often, lethargy, and not eating are not typical 2-4 days after vaccination and deworming. It is very concerning that she is having these signs and she could have an infection or possibly have a parasite that was not susceptible to the dewormer that you used. She really should be seen by a vet to determine the cause and treat. She may need an anti-vomiting injection, antibiotic, antacid, gastrointestinal protectant, dewormer, and/or other medications to treat.
